Review: Jaded (Mended Hearts #1) by Varina Denman

April 10, 2015 Christian, church, contemporary, romance, Varina Denman 14

From the back cover:

As a child, Ruthie Turner was shunned by the local congregation. Now, thirteen years later, Ruthie’s heart begins to stir when an attractive single preacher arrives. But their relationship is bitterly opposed, and a string of secrets are unearthed that threaten to turn the church, the town, and her world upside down.

Jaded is the rare novel that is a love story between both a woman and a man … and God and His church. Plunging deep into the waters of shame, forgiveness, and restoration, this book will resonate with every woman who’s experiences a loss of heart … and a thirst for hope.

My review: (I received an advance reader copy in exchange for this honest review.) Even if I hadn’t received this book with the intention of leaving a review, I would have had to leave one. Ms. Denman’s debut novel is quite simply everything I want in a book — Her writing voice is smooth and easy and the scenes played out in my head like a movie while I read. The characters are so life-like and relatable that I felt almost sad when I closed the book because I wouldn’t get to spend time with them anymore. The romance was so very gentle and sweet and grin-inducing. 🙂 See? I even grin just thinking about it again lol. And the plot … Something we all as believers know about the church but wish weren’t true: Sometimes, churches get it wrong. And when they do, they tend to get it REALLY wrong! But then along comes someone who lives out Jesus and slowly begins making the sad things untrue again with His help and with quiet and consistent demonstrations of His love. The Cunninghams were people like this. Finally, the little bits of unanswered questions have me waiting most impatiently for the next book – Justified!!

I give it 5 out of 5 stars!

Loved your review — I have it on order at my library. Really excited to read it now. Sounds like it will be an emotional page-turner. And very cool that it’s a debut novel.

Kav, her next one – Justified – is coming out soon too. I can’t wait! It follows characters introduced in Jaded and hopefully answers some of these pesky unanswered questions I’m dying to solve lol!

  1. Author Interview (Plus a Giveaway!): Varina Denman & Jaded | reading is my superpower

[…] I stumbled into Varina Denman’s launch team for Jaded after seeing a blurb about it in her email newsletter.  I had never been on a launch team before, but her description of what it involved captured my interest.  Frankly, she had me at “Or simply open your front door and yell really loudly.” I didn’t have this blog at the time but I figured I could do at least that much. 🙂 One thing worried me a little though … What if, when I read the book, I hated it? I mean, I read a LOT but I’m actually pretty picky about what I like and bad writing will have me closing a book faster than you can say “library card”.  There are simply too many books to read and not enough of a lifetime in which to read them; I have no time to waste on books that I don’t like.  Well, my anxiety was completely without merit.  I was hooked on Jaded from word one and could barely put it down until I closed the last page. It seems I am in good company as Jaded won the ACFW Genesis Contest for Inspirational Romance. You can read my review here – Jaded. […]
