about the book

What’s in a name?

Names are more than groups of letters that represent a person or identify objects. Names are powerful. A person’s character and destiny can be influenced by his or her name.
God’s attributes and personality support His unique and distinct names. If we comprehend the meanings of His titles, we can know God more intimately.
In Experiencing God Through His Names, Sheryl Giesbrecht walks with you on an exciting journey to discover and absorb the truth about God’s character.
In the next 31 days, God wants you to get to know Him. Are you ready?

Experiencing God Through His Names is a 31-day devotional comprised of short, easy to ingest reflections on 31 names of God. Some of the names the author covers are as familiar to me as my own skin, while others were new to me. Still others are names I’ve heard but couldn’t necessarily tell you what they mean.

For instance, any one who grew up in the 80s like I did will break into song on days 3, 6, and 7. Why? Well, because those days cover the names “El Elyon”, “El Shaddai”, and “Adonai”… words that entered our melodious vocabulary thanks to Amy Grant. Yet, how many of us actually have reflected on what those names mean and how God is that for us? Unless you’ve previously done a study on the names of God (like Kay Arthur’s, perhaps), your experience of God as that name is probably limited to that song. Well… at least in ways that you could verbalize. Chances are, you HAVE experienced Him as each of those things – the Most High God, the Almighty, and Sovereign Lord – but you just didn’t have a name to go with that experience.  (And if all three of those names seem like exactly the same thing to you, you will enjoy delving deeper into the meanings through this devotional.)

Bottom Line: Experiencing God Through His Names by Sheryl Giesbrecht would be a great choice for anyone who is new to the study of the names of God and/or anyone who wants a quick and simple devotional book. The writing style is very accessible, so if you just want to sit down and read it in one sitting you could do that too. While you don’t have to look up any Scripture (it’s all provided for you), this is a good springboard for further study if you so desire.

(I received a copy of this book in exchange for only my honest review.)

My Rating: 4 stars / Good for a quick devotional start to the day!

It does sound like a great way to start one’s day. Thanks for sharing, Carrie.

I think my favorite name of God is when He tells Moses “tell them I AM has sent you”. It really shows how mighty God is and that He is all powerful. Like He really doesn’t even need a name, because He is who He is.
