Sunday Book Club: Stacks of Books

April 2, 2017 Sunday Book Club 42

Happy Sunday, my friends!

Today, let’s talk about book towers. You know, those stacks of books that won’t fit on your bookshelf so they tower from the floor to nearly the bookshelf’s height. Or maybe you stack up your TBR pile for the week or the month, etc. Or maybe you just follow the Dr. Seuss school of decorating?

I recently found this house tour on Apartment Therapy. It’s a home which clearly belongs to a book lover, given the stacks of books in nearly every photo. I love it and I would feel right at home there lol.  But if you read the comments? Not everyone shares my opinion.

So now it’s your turn. Do stacks of books bother you? Or are they part of your own decorating?

I think stack just naturally occur if you are a book reader. The real question is do you keep them in control or do they control you? I try to tend to the piles as I do other forms of housekeeping – on a regular schedule where I organize and put up. As too with housework, some times that takes a backseat to more pressing things but at least I never get them stacked to the ceiling. 🙂

LOL so far i haven’t stacked to the ceiling either … but it’s getting close 😉

Small stacks of books make me very happy! 😊📚 I have books in almost every room of the house and I just love looking at them – especially my TBR books. I definitely use them as part of my decorating although not nearly to the extreme of the apartment you pointed out!

    • Carrie

i don’t intend to use them to that extreme but my stacks of books are threatening to take over my house so I’ve decided to embrace it lol

I’m a fellow book lover… so I’m not sure my opinion counts here as unbiased. However, I decorate with books. Books can be found in every room of my home. 📚❤️

I not only have stacks of books but teo of our spare bedrooms are overtaken by books. They are stacked on and against every available surface. The thing is, I have read them all. I really need to donate them to the library. Or, thought about giving them to family or women’s shelter. These days, I read almost all books on my Kindle Fire. I don’t have to worry about stacking them now.

I have stacks in most rooms too. The only thing that bothers me is the thought that there’s no way I can possibly get them all read before I die! 😳 Yet still books continue to enter my house!

I give almost all the books I read away, so unread books whisper, murmur and sometimes shout “read me”. 😉

I have a nice big shelf for books. Only two shelves have books, though. I have jewelry boxes and other stuff on most of them. But I have stacks on the shelves instead if the regular way! Another shelf across the room has a row of books. But then there are a couple small stacks here and there! I’m a crafter, too so they have to share! THIS IS MY ROOM! Don’t say it’s messy! It’s ME!

I love books, I just like them to be in baskets, or on shelves or something. I always feel a stray book must feel lost and lonely! 😊

  9. Heather

Yes, I’m guilty of stacking books around my room too. Mostly because I’ve run out of room on my bookshelves…Lol.

Stacks of books are very normal in my house. They used to bother my hubby though.

I love my books! Stacks never bother me.
My question is, When did you find time to browse apartments on Pinterest?

    • Carrie

Well… actually I saw an article about it first lol – and then investigated 😉

stacks of books don’t bother me in the least. they bother my husband, though.

Stacks don’t bother me. I try to keep them relegated to the bookshelf, but sometimes I have one or two about. My bookcase is about 4 ft. high. On the top I have books stacked I need to get to. They are now 2 ft. from the ceiling.

i use books FOR my decor,as part of it, in the floor, on shevles, on tables – in any way i can – i vary their position on shelves, lined up, stacked, stacked on top of “soldiers”

Like a prior commenter, stacks of books aren’t bothersome to me, but they are to my hubby. I have to contain them to the “library” (aka “the cats’ room”) and to my bedroom. Thank goodness for my kindle, where he cannot see the many books stacked there, too.

This so timely! I just did a book “spring cleaning” yesterday because my stack on the nightstand kept sliding into a book avalanche! I pulled books from everywhere and decided it’s time to part with some I’ve already read. I’m donating those. Those I can’t part with, I have a nice trunk and decided to store most of them. A few I’ve left on a table beside my reading chair in my bedroom. I still want them close. My TBR books are shelved, except for five of them I kept on the nightstand (I had to limit myself). Today…my books are under control. Tomorrow…??? 🙂

I have stacks of books all over my house but not quite as bad as the picture above. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have books around!

  18. Winnie Thomas

Most of my books are on bookshelves or boxed in my storage room downstairs. I have a few around for decoration and a couple of stacks. I go through them periodically and donate those I don’t think I’ll read again. I think those large stacks of books would bother me. I like things a little more tidy than that, besides, if they fell over, they would probably severely injure one of the grandkids, or they would play the “knock over the tower” game.

I have books everywhere. My shelves (in every room of the house) are stacked two or three deep and then have books stacked sideways on top of those. I need to clear out some and donate them, but I find myself worried that I might desperately need them someday. I have stacks of books on my dresser and nightstand and desk. My cat likes to knock them on the floor from time to time. For some reason he especially disapproves of Dashiell Hammett. Who knew?

    • Carrie

I will hold my comment about cats and the superiority of dogs 😉 And YES. I mean, what if I gave away a book and then suddenly realized I needed it back?!? The struggle is real

I try to contain my stacks to one book basket in my den. I do have a five tier lawyer’s bookcase in the same room where my “keepers” reside . . .. but I give nearly all my books to my church library.

Or I would be buried alive in my own house.
