Album Review (and a Giveaway!): Mandisa’s Out of the Dark

May 24, 2017 Christian, giveaway, Mandisa 36

Mandisa wrote her song “Overcomer” in 2013 to encourage her close friend Kisha, who was battling breast cancer. Mandisa really believed and prayed that God was going to heal her, but when Kisha went to be with Jesus in 2014, Mandisa’s foundation was shaken in a way she never expected. She fell into a deep pit of depression for close to 3 years, shutting out her friends, family and the rest of the world. Mandisa believes if she had kept going down that road she was on, she would not be here today… but God stepped in and lifted her out of that pit by using her close friends to communicate their love for her and God’s love for her. This album is Mandisa’s way of letting her fans into her story – it’s called ‘Out Of The Dark’ because that is exactly where God lifted her out of!

You can watch her talk openly about this on Good Morning America last week:

Mandisa’s new album Out of the Dark is honest and full of tenderness and JOY!! As someone who can relate to Mandisa’s journey in – and out – of the pit of depression, as someone who wakes up every morning to Mandisa belting out “Overcomer”, this album and these songs hit all the right notes.

I especially appreciate her authenticity that shines through such songs as one of my faves “I’m Still Here” (This overcomer lost her will to fight…) , the heartbreakingly beautiful “Prove Me Wrong” (I can’t find my way out of the dark…), “My First Love” (My heart’s at war and my faith is shaken”) and “Unfinished” which I will talk more about in a minute.

Along with the honest, there is also the inspiring. Songs “Bleed the Same” (“We were made to carry one another. We were made for more.“), “The One He Speaks Through” (He might use your whisper, maybe a smile, to tell someone they’re worthwhile…”), “Shine” (“Out of the madness / Up from the ashes / This the moment you were made for…”), and “Comeback Kid” (“I will stand / Nothing’s gonna keep me down…”) are songs you’ll have on repeat. And in every Mandisa album, there’s at least one song that brings out my inner dance diva (the one that no one but Zuzu the dog ever sees). In Out of the Dark “What You’re Worth” and “Good News” are my new dance songs – the message is great and so is the groove factor!

Oh – and the update on her brother John – oh my heart!

And then there’s “Unfinished”, unquestionably one of my favorite songs on the album. I love it for its authenticity, its sincerity, its compassion and the JOY that radiates from the lyrics, the music, and Mandisa’s gorgeous voice. I’m not ashamed to admit that this has been on repeat since I cracked open the album and there may have been (there were) tears!

I’m confident that this will be one of my fave Mandisa albums for years to come!

Right here. This girl. Me. I need to win this CD. 🙂 I love “Overcomer!” How can you NOT shout-sing that?! (Not that anyone should EVER hear me do that!) I love, love “Unfinished.” Mandisa did a radio interview on our local JOY FM station a few weeks ago. To hear her talk about her depression…and then the guilt she felt for being depressed…heartbreaking. So I’m really looking forward to “I’m Still Here.” Great review, Carrie! (And I’m not just saying that because I want the CD. Okay, maybe I am
    a little.) LOL! 🙂

I’ve been praying for a dear friend going through radical breast cancer treatments for the past few months & for her upcoming radiation…it’s so very, very hard. I’ve enjoyed hearing “Unfinished” on KLOVE radio–I didn’t know it came out of a dark place of depression for Mandisa. I would love to hear the rest of the album & share it with my friend.
