about the book

He’s ready to settle down…with or without her

Scott Abbott has always loved Isabelle Hawks.

And he’s always been her rock. Patient, dependable, strong. But lately, she’s been acting like that rock is weighing her down.

With her art career taking off, Isabelle has been spending less and less time in Indian Lake…and with him. Scott isn’t even sure what they are to each other anymore.

They might be friends with a history, but it sure doesn’t feel like a future.

Maybe it’s time for Scott to set her free and focus on his own dreams. A real home. A family. All the things he had hoped to share with her…

I love Indian Lake and its residents, so every new visit there feels like catching up with old friends. Catherine Lanigan does a fabulous job crafting this small town and creating a family-like atmosphere among the characters. Everyone knows each other and truly cares about each other. And with the world the way it is today, we need a lot more of that!

Scott is one of my fave Indian Lake heroes. The way he lost his heart to Bella and Michael and immediately made room in his life for them is both swoon-inducing and inspiring. He loves consistently even when expecting nothing in return, evidenced by his relationship with Isabelle. At the same time, he’s not a doormat. He knows when it’s healthier – for himself and Isabelle – for him to back off and guard his heart. He also knows when it’s time to step back up to the plate and make a declaration.

Isabelle, however? Not my fave Indian Lake heroine. She’s selfish. She’s self-focused. And she’s more concerned with what she doesn’t have than on the blessings right in front of her. The way she treats Scott is so frustrating that I wanted – more than once – to shout through the pages and tell him to cut her loose lol. I appreciated her character growth throughout the novel, but overall I stayed annoyed with her.

Bottom Line: This is not a book where you can easily predict the ending. I honestly didn’t know how it was going to turn out. Lanigan wove a story with complicated players and some unexpected twists, while once again infusing the novel with warmth and family. While I never really warmed up to Isabelle, Scott (and Bella and Michael) makes up for this in spades. And of course the setting of Indian Lake is one I’m always happy to visit 🙂

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4 stars / I love Indian Lake!

KissingBook Level: 3 / Scott sure knows how to kiss 😉

Hi, Kay! Thanks for stopping by the blog! I do love this cover, it’s so happy. I hope you like the story. My author friends know…I cried through nearly the entire book. Scott’s unrequited love was heart-stirring! Good luck with the giveaway!

I love when authors can give me warm characters that are 3D and make me want to care about them. I also enjoy being surprised my the plot twists. With the lake setting, I think this will be a fun and exciting book to read.

    • Carrie

“warm characters that are 3D” – yes! that’s a great description of Catherine’s books! 🙂

Ooohhh, two of my favorite people in the world together for a post! (The only things missing to make it perfect, from my perspective, is Zuzu.)

I look forward to reading FAMILY OF HIS OWN . . . and sharing another July release date with Catherine!

    • Carrie

Zuzu has already read HOME TO STAY and is taunting me with teasers 😉

I like the fact that the main guy character knows what he wants and remains steadfast in his love for the heroine. But I love the fact that it doesn’t make him a doormat. That’s a hard line to walk but I’m glad the author succeeded. Reading the synopsis and review definitely intrigued me.

The cover is interesting. I would not have expected this type of cover to go along with the book synopsis….unless the woman on the cover is not Isabelle….or Scott and Isabelle actually do end up happily ever after. The author and her books are new to me but they sound wonderful.

    • Carrie

you’ll have to read it and see how the cover works out 😉

  6. Martha T.
