about the book

For twenty-something Sara Witherspoon and her group of friends, a perfect Southern summer includes lake house getaways, wedding planning, outdoor concerts, and a dash of romance. But for this unique gang of seven friends who love each other like family, this year, summer rolls in with a host of changes for everyone.

When Sara’s longtime crush and closest friend, Luke, begins seriously dating another girl in the group, she’s forced into a situation of dealing with hurt and jealousy, while outwardly trying to support her friends.

Throw an unexpected handsome pilot from North Carolina into the mix, as well as an old flame, and Sara’s life gets even more complicated.

As time unfolds, Sara and the others are presented with the reality of what a season of change can do to close friends.

“Love is the undoing of all of us.”

This book, y’all. It undid me.

It took me back to my circle of friends from my 20s, to the ups and downs and everything-in-betweens. These characters are so real to me. I could easily identify with them, despite how long it’s been since I was their age, and Sara and Luke in particular hit me in all the feels.

I’m not afraid to admit that I cried. More than once, actually, as Sara’s – and Luke’s – pain reminded me of my own relationship journey. But I smiled A LOT too and even chuckled on a few occasions. Brandy Bruce’s writing style and subsequently Sara’s narrative voice are full of personality and charm. You will fall in love with Sara and Luke – and Lily, Sam, Jason, Addison and even Everett. Debra…. well… I’m sure she has lovely qualities too – and you’re free to love her lol – but I just gritted my teeth whenever she showed up on the page 😉

But, lest you think The Last Summer is all about a bunch of twenty-somethings who gallivant around at the lake all summer with love triangle angst, I can assure you there is so much more to this compelling novel. It’s about true friendship. Trusting God. Praising Him when everything else falls apart. And extending grace – the grace God has given to us – to others and ourselves. It’s an acknowledgement that “All of our love stories have imperfect chapters” and a reminder that “God can fix broken things. He uses broken people for His glory.”

Bottom Line: The Last Summer by Brandy Bruce is the perfect choice to pack on your summer vacation. Characters who are flawed just like we are, an engaging narrator/heroine who becomes your new friend, an emotional journey that hits us in all the feels, and a touching reminder to praise God in the good and the bad.  This is not a story – or its characters – that I will be forgetting anytime soon. Charming, real, and completely compelling, make sure this one is on your must-read list!

I’m not typically drawn to books about modern day romances, but your review was so heartfelt (and I DO trust your opinions), I will have to put this one on my TBR list.

this is one is so much more than a romance. I mean… the romance is stellar and heartwrenching and swoony. lol. But the themes of trusting God through some tough situations is very sweetly done.
