Album Review: Nichole Nordeman’s Every Mile Mattered

August 4, 2017 Christian, Nichole Nordeman 1

Nichole Nordeman has been one of my favorite recording artists since I saw her in concert with Steven Curtis Chapman eons ago. I wept at her song ‘I Am’ because it so tenderly described my own journey with Jesus, and it remains one of my most cherished songs.

Her new album “Every Mile Mattered” is her fifth studio release and her first since 2015. Nichole describes the album by saying:

These songs have been working their way into my heart for years, long before they were bound by lyric or melody. They are mile markers. Places I’ve been . Things I’ve seen, and maybe see a little differently now. Every mile on that road mattered. The endless miles of God’s mercy and goodness. Every bump and bruise. The long stretches I’d rather erase. The journey really does change us, or should, anyway. I hope these songs offer grace to any traveler who stumbles into them.”

The track list includes the title song as well as You’re Here; Dear Me; No Longer; Lean; Hush, Hush; Listen to Your Life; Beautiful Day; Sound of Surviving; Anywhere We Are; Slow Down.

As always with a new Nichole Nordeman album, there are some songs I absolutely love – and the ones I love so resonate with me that I play them on repeat until they become a part of my mental repertoire. The song “Sound of Surviving” is one of these new favorites. I love Nichole’s story behind the song almost as much as I love the song itself:

It reminds me of a verse I cling to often. Micah 7:8 – Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.

Another of my faves from this album is “Dear Me” and hearing the story behind this song really made me think. Have you ever thought about writing a letter to your younger self? If so, what would you say?

Some other songs I loved are You’re Here, Every Mile Mattered, No Longer, Lean and Anywhere We Are. Nichole Nordeman is a master songwriter – her lyrics are always gently profound, elegantly woven and spun, and her authenticity speaks to my heart. “Every Mile Mattered” is beautifully composed and poignantly performed. Each song reminds us of the steps along the journey that have made us who we are today – and will continue to shape us in the future. I highly recommend everything Nichole records, including this latest album.
