about the book

New York Times Bestselling Author Shelley Shepard Gray gifts us with a special Christmas story about love and blessings in this next book in her Amish of Hart County series.

The Schwartz family is happy to be spending Christmas on their new farm in Hart County. But when Susanna Schwartz hears gunshots that causes her buggy to overturn, and then her little sister falls through a wooden bridge into the icy creek, it becomes clear from these dangerous “accidents” that someone wants them gone.

Neil Vance has been heartbroken ever since his parents lost their family farm. He knows it’s not the Schwartz family’s fault, but he can’t help but be resentful. Until he meets Susanna. She is kind-hearted and bold, and Neil can’t stop thinking about her pretty green eyes.

Neil thinks the accidents are just that, but Susanna’s father is convinced the Vance family is responsible. Susanna refuses to believe Neil would do anything to harm her. She’s fallen in love with him and knows he is a good man. But her family is ready to pack up and move, and time is running out to uncover the truth before someone gets hurt…or worse.

“…the truth is that you arrived in my life like a gift.”

I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s books. I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s suspense books. I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s Amish books. I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s Kentucky books. I love Shelley Shepard Gray’s Christmas books. So when a new Shelley Shepard Gray book releases & it’s an Amish suspense novel set in Kentucky at Christmas? Ssshhh… don’t bother me while I’m reading 😉

I loved Susanna and Neil – together and separately. They are both fantastic characters and they have great chemistry together. I also really loved the secondary romance subplot playing out in this story! The suspense is well-plotted and you will find yourself cautiously peering around corners as things go from bad to worse for Susanna’s family.  There’s a bit of predictability, sure, but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyability of the novel.

Shelley Shepard Gray writes with a delightful blend of warmth and grace, with just the right amount of sass thrown in for good measure 🙂 You sit down to read a chapter and, before you know it, you’ve finished the whole thing because it’s so charming! The Gift is the same way. It’s a quick read but you’ll find yourself wrapped up in the words like a soft comforting blanket.

Bottom Line: The Gift by Shelley Shepard Gray is Christmasy and cozy and comforting… uhhhh there’s just the little matter of someone wanting to harm Susanna and her family 😉 Humor, heart, and faith join forces with danger and suspense – and the magic of the season – to bring you the perfect read for these colder nights!

My favorite Christmas gift was a Nintendo DS from my Sister. They were so hard to get that year, it was a total surprise.
