I have the privilege of being part of the launch team for Tiffany Girl, Deeanne Gist’s latest book due to be released May 5, 2015. This is such a treat for me because I have loved Deeanne’s books ever since reading Maid to Match, a Christian romance set at The Biltmore estate in North Carolina. Her subject matter and settings may change with each book but you can always count on Deeanne to capture your attention with spunky heroines, drool-worthy heroes, and pivotal eras in America’s history!
Recently, I was able to preview the first few chapters and… wow! I am hooked already! The story begins with a short prologue that introduces us to a little boy named Reeve who has just lost his mother and whose life as he knew it proceeds to crumble. Deeanne’s word imagery in this scene is just exquisite – for example: “Grandfather’s flinty eyes took in his mismatched stockings, his threadbare jacket, his stained hat. Reeve didn’t need to touch him to know he was hard as the rocks by the creek and just as cold.”
We then leap forward 22 years and meet Flossie, a young woman trying to make it on her own in the art & design world – despite the disapproval of her parents. On her last day of art school (thanks to her father’s gambling problem), Flossie encounters Mr. Louis Comfort Tiffany; she so appeals to him with her “color outside the lines” philosophy that he hires her to become one of his “Tiffany Girls” needed to work on the stained glass for his upcoming World Expo exhibit in Chicago. (For “Five dollars a week. All of it hers.“) What follows are Flossie’s adventures (and some misadventures, it seems!) in transforming herself into a ‘New Woman’ with what Amazon calls a “colorful cast of characters“. To complicate matters further, Amazon adds this teaser from what I assume is printed on the back of the book: “As challenges mount, her ambitions become threatened from an unexpected quarter: her own heart. Who will claim victory? Her dreams or the captivating boarder next door?” Is this where we meet Reeve again? Will her progressive ambitions keep her from finding a ‘happily ever after’ with this captivating boarder? I guess we’ll have to wait and see! Hurry up and get here, May 5th!
