Top Ten Tuesday Favorite

This week’s edition of “Top Ten Tuesday” (hosted as always by The Broke and the Bookish) is brought to you by those books I meant to read in 2015 but …umm… didn’t.

Yet.

I’m looking at you, 2016.

The Year of the TBR pile.

mystery suspense

midnight on the mississippi

New Orleans–Hunter Galen, a stock and securities broker, suspects his business partner, James Nowak, may be involved in embezzling their clients’ money, but he’s reluctant to jeopardize their friendship based on suspicion alone. After James turns up dead, Hunter realizes his unwillingness to confront a problem may have cost James his life.

Nicki Price, a newly minted PI, intends to solve the stockbroker’s murder, recover the missing millions from the client accounts, and establish herself in the career she adores. As she ferrets out fraud and deception at Galen Investments, Hunter’s fiancee, Ashley Menard, rubs Nicki the wrong way. Nicki doesn’t trust the ostentatious woman with an agenda longer than the Mississippi River. Ashley seems to be hiding something, but is Nicki’s growing attraction to Hunter–a suspected murderer–her true reason for disliking Ashley?

As they encounter sophisticated shell games, blackmail, and murder, Nicki and Hunter’s only option is to turn to God as they search for answers, elude lethal danger, and perhaps discover love along the way.

deadlock

Two murders have rocked the city of Houston. Are they the work of a serial killer, or is a copycat trying to get away with murder?

That is the question facing Special Agent Bethany Sanchez, who is eager for her new assignment in violent crimes but anxious about meeting her new partner. Special Agent Thatcher Graves once arrested her brother, and he has a reputation for being a maverick. Plus, their investigative styles couldn’t be more opposite: he operates on instinct, while she goes by the book.

When hot leads soon fizzle out, their differences threaten to leave them deadlocked. But an attempt on their lives turns up the heat and brings them closer together, and a third victim might yield the clue that will help them zero in on a killer. This could be the case of their careers . . . if they can survive long enough to solve it.

noble masquerade.jpg

Lady Miranda Hawthorne acts every inch the lady, but inside she longs to be bold and carefree. Entering her fourth Season and approaching spinsterhood in the eyes of society, she pours her innermost feelings out not in a diary but in letters to her brother’s old school friend, a duke–with no intention of ever sending these private thoughts to a man she’s heard stories about but never met. Meanwhile, she also finds herself intrigued by Marcus, her brother’s new valet, and although she may wish to break free of the strictures that bind her, falling in love with a servant is more of a rebellion than she planned.

When Marcus accidentally discovers and mails one of the letters to her unwitting confidant, Miranda is beyond mortified. And even more shocked when the duke returns her note with one of his own that initiates a courtship-by-mail. Insecurity about her lack of suitors shifts into confusion at her growing feelings for two men–one she’s never met but whose words deeply resonate with her heart, and one she has come to depend on but whose behavior is more and more suspicious. When it becomes apparent state secrets are at risk and Marcus is right in the thick of the conflict, one thing is certain: Miranda’s heart is far from all that’s at risk for the Hawthornes and those they love.

falling like snowflakes

Eden Martelli is too busy fleeing the clutches of danger to realize she’s running straight into the arms of a new love.

Speeding north through rural Maine, Eden Martelli wonders how her life came to this—on the run with her mute five-year-old son dozing fitfully in the passenger seat. When a breakdown leaves them stranded in Summer Harbor, Eden has no choice but to stay put through Christmas . . . even though they have no place to lay their heads.

Beau Callahan is a habitual problem solver—for other people anyway. He left the sheriff’s department to take over his family’s Christmas tree farm, but he’s still haunted by the loss of his parents and struggling to handle his first Christmas alone.

When Eden shows up looking for work just as Beau’s feisty aunt gets out of the hospital, Beau thinks he’s finally caught a break. Eden is competent and dedicated—if a little guarded—and a knockout to boot. But, as he soon finds out, she also comes with a boatload of secrets.

Eden has been through too much to trust her heart to another man, but Beau is impossible to resist, and the feeling seems to be mutual. As Christmas Eve approaches, Eden’s past catches up to her.

Beau will go to the ends of the earth to keep her safe. But who’s going to protect his heart from a woman who can’t seem to trust again?

  1. I missed Mary Ellis’ book too but finagled its way onto my book club’s list! Looks like some late night catch up reading for you (and me). Thanks for sharing.

  2. Don’t forget to read Fairest for the Lunar Chronicles! I’d even suggest reading it first since you haven’t read the series. It’s a prequel about the main antagonist and helps explain a lot of things that weren’t explained well in the books (because no one on Earth knew anything but rumors about Levana.)

  3. Great list! 🙂
I hope you are able to get to them all in 2016!
I read the first three books in the Lunar Chronicles, but haven’t really liked it as much as I hoped I would.

  4. I love your list! I also had plans to read Deadlock, A Reluctant Bride, and The Bronte Plot, although only the latter two actually made it onto my Top Ten Tuesday list. I did, however, get to read both A Noble Masquerade and Falling Like Snowflakes (mostly since I have a copy of each of them), and I have to tell you, I think you’re going to really love them. I absolutely melted my way through both books; those were two of my absolute favorite novels to review, that’s for sure!

  5. Nice list! I also listed “A Noble Masquerade.” It didn’t appeal to me when it first came out, but the more I read about it, the more I wanted it. Maybe 2016. 😀

  6. Great way to break the list up! So many of these are on my TBR too. Especially the Lunar Chronicles. I have read Cinder, and really, really want to continue on with the series. I have the same problem, my TBR grows waaaaaaaay too fast. 🙂
