The strength of this novel lies in its characters. Sometimes it takes me at least a couple of chapters to warm up even to the main characters in a novel.  Not so in Beyond The Silence. I was immediately drawn to Jimmy, to Lillian, to Woody (more on him in a moment), to Mrs. Goodman, to Harry from the moment each appeared on the page. Peterson and Woodhouse brought them vividly to life, and these characters only grew more dear as the book progressed.

Woody.  Oh my goodness.  Tender. Raw. Godly. Trying to find hope in a world that has turned upside down for him. He had me at his first prayer – honest and vulnerable but still all man.

I also really liked the juxtaposition between Jimmy’s silence and the townsfolk’s … um.. NOT silence. While I did think the emphasis on the evils of gossip strayed into overkill on occasion, the comparison – between a character who knew everything and said nothing vs. a town who knew nothing and said everything – was sobering.

Bottom Line: Fans of historical fiction – particularly in a frontier setting – will enjoy this latest collaboration between Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse.  The characters alone make this well worth the read, and the thread of suspense just adds to the overall appeal. An enjoyable way to pass an evening or two 🙂
