Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Random Facts About Me (as written by my husband)

Top Ten Tuesday Favorite

Today’s topic for the Top Ten Tuesday linkup is “Ten Facts About Me”.  Now… I don’t mind sharing an occasional fact about myself here or there but setting out on purpose to give you TEN facts just seemed too weird for me. Refusing to be stymied by the task, however, I recruited my husband to write them for me 🙂

ten random facts about me

Bless him, he’s put up with me for 16 years now – longer if you count the three years we were friends and the one year we dated. Outside of my parents and my brother, he knows me best.  He’s known me at my best and at my worst, through a lot of sickness and a little health, through a lot of poor and zero rich (unless you count books. We’re rich in books.) and for whatever reason he still loves me.

Take it away, E! (I say, with the slightest trepidation…lol)

Thanks, Carebear. Ok, so you may know a lot about Carrie from all these reviews, but what do you really know?! I could write 50 things about Carrie, but we only have so much time.  So let’s get this started!

number 1

She reads … a lot.

With a blog called Reading is my Superpower, you think this is just someone who likes to read or likes to be known as someone who can read. But no, mere mortal, this is a woman who reads novels and picks out punctuation and grammar mistakes in published works AND plot mistakes in published books as well! She isn’t a speed reader either. Her eyes see the page in its entirety as well as the page ahead. (Sidenote from Carrie: It’s really more like a few paragraphs ahead.) I’ve watched her flip through kindle pages.

Years ago, we had one of our first library dates and I picked out a book and she picked out five.  I thought this was rather optimistic.  I felt fine because my book was The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which contained all 5 books of the series.  As I reached chapter 3, she threw her book down.  “Was it not good?” I asked like a fool.  “What? Oh! No, I finished it.” I was stunned. (Sidenote from Carrie: It did, in my defense, take him the better part of a Saturday to reach chapter three.)

number 2

She doesn’t laugh; she giggles.

If you attend the CFRR this August you will experience the cutest thing EVER. Carrie can laugh, but it’s rare. It has to be something so stunningly funny that she’ll laugh like the rest of us – hard. (I’m pleased to report that I have achieved that level of laughter with her.) Giggles that come from her are musical and trilly. They are addictive and contagious. You’ve been warned.

number 3

She drinks Diet Coke like water.

Specifically, she drinks Caffeine Free Diet Coke.  Even more specifically she drinks Big K Caffeine Free Diet Cola. Even further more specifically it’s quite a few.  Her preferred drink of choice is a large Diet Coke with extra ice in a foam cup from McDonald’s. It has to be extra ice. (Sidenote from Carrie: I really am trying to drink more water. But … just … yuck.)

number 4

She collects Cinderella stories.

Disney’s Cinderella is her Star Wars. She wasn’t the same after that. Nope, she’s all up in that. She has a nice selection of Cinderella stories from other cultures and loves the theme when it’s played out in other stories.  That’s her Disney Princess. She has the slipper. (Sidenote from Carrie: I don’t really have the slipper.)

number 5

She lurked around the blogs for two years before starting her own.

If people ask Carrie for advice about blogging, she will tell them to study. (Sidenote from Carrie: I do.) It’s not like she took a seminar or something, though. This isn’t the case. Carrie literally just lurked around the major blogs and communities, gleaning “the feel” of the audiences.  She made relationships and learned what people liked and didn’t like.  One day, she decided she had something to offer and so she burst out of the gate writing reviews. What you see is her hard work and tenacity to stick with a passion for books.

number 6

She’s a mixture of Hermione Granger from The Harry Potter series and Monica Geller from Friends.

She once thought she failed a test, but got 104% on it.  Meanwhile, I thought I did really well and got a D. (Sidenote from Carrie: He really really loves to tell that story lol.  I knew it would end up here.) From Hermoine’s MO “When in doubt, go to the library” to Monica’s sense of justification of “I KNOW!” you can be sure she is someone who knows her stuff and knows it well. (Sidenote from Carrie: I really think it’s more to do with my Hermione-ish hair.)

number 7

The sun makes her sneeze.

We believe someone must have blessed her when she was a baby with the saying “may the sun shine on her always” because it does. Always. Even if you close the blinds, the sun will bounce off several reflective surface to hit her in the eyeball.  When the sun hits Carrie in the eyeball, she sneezes.  Not sure why, but there it is.

number 8

Her first word was ‘Book.’

For those who love foreshadowing, this fits nicely in your trope.  Books will always be in her life and her last word might be book too.  Actually, it might be books. That way she started with one book and ended with many. (Sidenote from Carrie: Since it is likely I will die next to – or under – a pile of things I was meaning to read a la Lemony Snicket, my last word being ‘book’ makes perfect sense.)

number 9

Her reading record is 5 books in one day.

Granted, she was a little cross-eyed after that day, but she did it.

(Sidenote from Carrie: I did. I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart.)

number 10

She’s a night owl.

Don’t misunderstand me. She’s indoorsy. (Sidenote from Carrie: I also don’t like owls. Bird phobia.) 8pm is when she starts to hit her stride and will write, read, read or yes, even read well into the wee hours of the morning.  (Sidenote from Carrie: I also go to bed at 8pm. Not to sleep. Just to bed.) The night is her friend, but her BFFs are a blanket, pajama pants, comfy shirt, laptop, dog attached to leg, books close at hand, and – of course – a diet coke.

Well, folks… that’s probably way more than you ever wanted to know about yours truly but there you have it 🙂 As written by my hubby who I think is super cute! And by the way, you want to talk about laughs? HIS laugh is contagious. My nephew is mesmerized by it.

  1. Well Carrie, thanks to the insight from your hubby I feel like I know you a little bit better! I had no idea sneezes could be triggered visually, add that to your superpowers list! I will protect you from birds and you can keep foam away from me (like the egg crate supports, dish sponges, and magic erasers… you know anything that feels like the sound of fingernails screeching across a chalkboard! I am so serious, someone comes after me with foam and I will run away. I’m getting the heeby-jeebies, hibbity-jibbities, and goosebumps just thinking about the stuff.)

  2. Winnie Thomas

Woohoo, Carrie’s husband, you did a great job! Carrie, I think we would be BFFs if we lived a little closer to each other–okay, a lot closer! I guess we can be BFFFs (Best Facebook Friends Forever), though. I can totally relate to so many things here–night owl, books, reads a lot, books, sun hitting me in the eye, books, mistakes in books (my eyes just gravitate to those). I’d really like to hear that giggle! The only thing I’m puzzled about is: nowhere in those 10 things did I hear your husband say chocolate! I guess next time I’ll have to send Diet Coke, huh? Did you teach yourself to read? I did–I could read well by the time I was four, and I annoyed my older sister immensely when I’d read over her shoulder and tell her the words she didn’t know. This was a fun post! 🙂

    • Carrie

YES! I did teach myself to read – right around 4 years old. We ARE BFFFs 🙂 Feel free to continue sending chocolate 🙂

      • Winnie Thomas

Woohoo BFFF! And I can see you are being a night owl since I’m sure it’s getting pretty late where you are. I’m still good for a couple more hours! 😉 I think the chocolate sending will be waiting for cooler weather (although it only got up to 72 deg. here today–and down to 42 this morning). It was in the 90s a couple of days ago.

        • Carrie

Yes for sure chocolate sending needs to wait until cooler weather is more prevalent. It is way too hot here. Ugh.

  3. Terrill Rosado

I’ve always wondered how some bloggers are able to stay on top of so MANY new releases. I mean, I read A LOT and I consider myself a fast reader, but holy cow! I wish I had your superpower. 🙂

  4. Bonnie Roof

I agree, Terrill – I read at a snails pace, compared to Carrie, lol!! Although Carrie & I do have several other things in common, just as Winnie and Carrie do. It’s 4:01 a.m. as I write this, and no – it’s not because I get up before the crack of dawn as Ruth Logan Herne does, it’s because I haven’t been to bed yet. Health issues and having worked 3rd shift at a job for a number of years before retiring – have only worsened the sleep issues I’ve had for 30+ years.

Loved the post – thanks, Eric!! As with Beth, I’m curious about the sun issue. I am somewhat sensitive to sun also and have probably always preferred being indoors – even though I grew up living on a farm and love to travel. How much of a problem is the sun for you, Carrie?? Does it keep you from going outdoors, or do you not care to – regardless of issues with the sun??

You’re one amazing, brilliant, fun, compassionate, godly lady, Carrie – I’m grateful and blessed we’ve become friends through our mutual passion/addiction for books!!

    • Carrie

The sun isn’t that much of a problem – I’m just a homebody 🙂 I so love you, Bonnie!!! And I love how God brought us together!!

  5. I love this!!! We can sneeze and giggle together in Nashville!!!

(Side note: I loved the side notes so much! *snicker)

Glad to hear you are still drinking water, even if it is yuk. Add lemon, it is better. 🙂

    Well done to your hubby!

  6. Andrea Stephens

I like you Carrie! Your husband did a great job. I’m glad I found your blog 🙂 I used to drink CFDC and CFDDR.P, now I drink iced tea with an occasional Diet Coke. I don’t like a lot of ice in my Diet Coke, it waters it down too much. I like to put in in the freezer and get it super cold before I drink it. My sister LOVES FDC (fountain Diet Coke). Now something about me that most don’t know, I can be tickled without being touched and my husband of 33 years, can wiggle his index finger at me in such a way it gives me the heebie jeebies (he still thinks it’s funny). I love to read, I read fairly fast too, hubby takes his time reading, it was a problem when we were reading the Harry Potter series. I also like sappy movies. I’ve been watching Hallmark’s Christmas in July and actually found a couple movies I had not seen. I love Cary Grant. My first crush was Johnny Cash.
I would love to hear your contagious giggle.

    • Andrea Stephens

Also, water IS yuck. It has always made me sick to my stomach. Doctor says I’m weird.

    • Carrie

I adore Cary Grant!! And that’s hilarious that you can be tickled without being touched! LOL.

I like you too, Andrea 😉 So glad God crossed our paths

  7. Tracey H

Aw..I love seeing you how your husband sees you. I think his comment, about your giggle being the cutest thing EVER, is the cutest thing EVER 🙂

I’ve read five of your ten recommendations, so that give me five to go look into (like I don’t already have 800+ on my kindle waiting and at least 100 print, book lover problems)

I don’t think I’ve ever read more than a book in a day, five in a day?! I can hardly conceive it! You go girl!!

Must go work on my reading speed, lol.

This fun post has me starting my day with a smile, thanks Eric and Carrie!

  8. Tracey H

A question about The Thorn Keeper, is it a stand alone or better read as the second in the series?

    • Carrie

it is better read as the second in the series, because you really need to “meet” Catherine in The Thorn Bearer in order to appreciate her in The Thorn Keeper 🙂

  9. carylkane

Carrie, I am even more in awe of your superpowers! I loved reading your hubby’s insight. I’m so sorry I won’t be able to meet you in August.

    Have a wonderful day!

  10. Seriously adorable!! Five books in one day! What the what? (As my six-year-old would say.) Reading IS your superpower. I was like you when it came to studying blogs and learning the fell of an audience. I did that for almost twenty years with Christian historical romance novels, too. I have a historical “voice” because I learned to speak the language of a historical writer. I’m looking forward to meeting you and hearing that giggle. 🙂

    • Carrie

I seriously don’t recommend that “five books in one day” thing. It was nearly the end of me LOL. 🙂 SO looking forward to meeting you too Gabe!

      • Winnie Thomas

I’m assuming they were full-length novels, Carrie. I must admit I’ve read more books than that in a day, but they were children’s books when my kids were little. 🙂 I’m sure I’ve read more than that in a day to my grandkids, too. I think I could manage a couple of full-length ones a day and probably did when I was younger, but I get distracted and need to get up and move around or do something else for a while. You’re amazing!!

    • Terrill Rosado

Gabrielle, I’m thrilled for your “historical voice.” In fact, just yesterday, I saw your first two LI books on Amazon and immediately put them on my Amazon wishlist. Congrats! I remember when you first announced your contract with Harlequin. I’m excited for September and the chance to finally read them.

  11. Can I just tell you how much I love that your husband gave you your facts? What an awesome idea! Makes me want to ask mine to do that, but I’m a little scared of what he might say! 😉

I can’t believe you read 5 books in a day! I’ve done two and thought that was good! That’s amazing!

You should try La Croix sparkling water if you’re trying to cut out the soda. I love their peach-pear flavor.

  12. Eric…you are too funny! Perfect match for our sweet giggly Carrie! And it is quite freaky, because I hit about 7 of those out of 10. And it’s only because I drink Coke instead of Diet Coke.something else happens to me instead of the sneeze when sun hits meat the perfect moment and that I am a nightowl, but because of work the next day, I give myself a curfew….which I may or may not have broken on more than one occasion. * MeezCarrie, I am scared of you! Bc it seems we are just as nutty (and cute) as each other. ?

    • Carrie

lol thanks. And I definitely don’t recommend the 5 books in one day thing on a regular basis! 😉

  13. Michelle Connell

I would love to hear your giggle, Carrie! And I’m a night owl also…wonder why. No, not really!

This post was a great idea, but as someone else commented, I’m not sure what mine would say…he’s not a big book reader, either. He does a lot of computer/geeky reading online though.

    • Carrie

I was a little nervous as to what Eric would go with LOL. It’s funny bc he mentioned things I would never have come up with on my own

  14. Carrie, this was SO cute. I love that you had your husband put this together. Trying to come up with TEN facts about yourself is difficult. Great job on this week’s meme to both of you! SO fun. (And of course, you read a lot! What better hobby is there!? :D)

  15. This is adorable!!! Love it!I snort when I laugh sometimes…my family gauges how finny something is if I end up snorting. Haha! And the sun makes my son sneeze like that…so weird! Can’t wait for CFRR!!!

  16. I love that your husband wrote your facts! How incredibly funny and super sweet! I also go to bed when I get home. Not to sleep. Just to bed. My bedroom is like most people’s living rooms, it’s where I spend all of my time if I can. (Maybe it’s because I’ve always had to share a bedroom with somebody and I’m hoarding having one all to myself now.)

  17. Aww, this was the best way to do this prompt!! I LOVED IT. And also omg, Carrie, your reading skills (AND THE SPEED) but me to absolute shame and I ADMIRE YOU SO MUCH!! AHHHH!!

  18. Oh my gosh. MARRIAGE GOALS right here.
I am sitting here in Starbucks grinning like an IDIOT over ALL THE LOVE and FEELS E put into this post. Wow. Carrie we adore you. <3 Eric? Major points.
