New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray begins a new series—The Amish of Hart County—with this suspenseful tale of a young Amish woman who is forced to move to a new town to escape a threatening stalker.
After a stalker went too far, Hannah Hilty and her family had no choice but to leave the bustling Amish community where she grew up. Now she’s getting a fresh start in Hart County, Kentucky…if only she wasn’t too scared to take it. Hannah has become afraid to trust anyone—even Isaac, the friendly Amish man who lives next door. She wonders if she’ll ever return to the trusting, easy-going woman she once was.
For Isaac Troyer, the beautiful girl he teasingly called “The Recluse” confuses him like no other. When he learns of her past, he knows he’s misjudged her. However, he also understands the importance of being grateful for God’s gifts, and wonders if they will ever have anything in common. But as Hannah and Isaac slowly grow closer, they realize that there’s always more to someone than meets the eye.
Just as Hannah is finally settling into her new life, and perhaps finding a new love, more secrets are revealed and tragedy strikes. Now Hannah must decide if she should run again or dare to fight for the future she has found in Hart County.

“It’s not just you against him anymore, Hannah.”
I cannot even properly express how excited I was when I first found out about this new series! My very favorite Shelley Shepard Gray series is still the very first one I read – the Secrets of Crittenden County – an Amish romantic suspense series set in Kentucky. So when Shelley announced that the Amish of Hart County series was also going to be Amish romantic suspense set in Kentucky, I did a giddy little happy dance.
And now I’ve read Her Secret. And I’m still doing a giddy little happy dance.
Because I changed my mind multiple times as to who I think the title is about. Because this ain’t your grandma’s Amish fiction – it’s a little edgy (in the best ways) while still retaining the sweetness that is a trademark of Gray’s writing. Because the suspense toys with “psychological thriller” status (and i LOVE that). Because the romance is charming and tender.
And because tucked away gently in the pages of this great Amish romance thriller (yes, you read that right) is a message of looking beyond yourself, of realizing that more goes on in life than what directly – or indirectly – affects you, and encouragement for those who may feel alone.
Bottom Line: It is no secret that I love suspense, I love romance, and I love books written by Shelley Shepard Gray. Combine all three? A recipe for a great read. Her Secret nicely sets the foundation for future books in the series, and I’m looking forward to meeting more Amish of Hart County!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)
My Rating: 4 stars / Love it!
