Stephenia H. McGee is no stranger to us here at RimSP! As part of the Excellence in Indie Publishing MASSIVE Giveaway going on this week, she talks to us today about taking “the leap”.
Deciding to start my own publishing company was a huge ordeal for me. I worried about everything. Would people think I just wasn’t good enough to land a big publisher? Would they look down on my work? Would I ever feel like I actually “made it”?
However, no matter how many reasons I came up with against it, I still felt God nudging me in that direction. Finally, after months of indecision and prayers that mostly consisted of “are You sure…?” I finally finished my story and took The Leap. The leap of faith of not submitting the manuscript to any agents or publishers. I was absolutely terrified when I finally uploaded The Whistle Walk and officially published it on my own. But, I was proud of it, too. I’d spent a lot of time learning how to produce a book and gathering a team of people that I still really enjoy working with.
That leap paid off, and The Whistle Walk did very well. Much better than my first book I had published with a small traditional publisher. A few months after The Whistle Walk’s publication, I even received a call from a New York publishing house, and I thought “this is it!” I figured maybe the whole indie thing was just a stepping stone to get to “real” publishing. But God still gently told me no, and I had to turn them down. That was hard…harder than I would like to admit. Now, I am so glad I did.
I believe starting By The Vine Press is the best thing I could have done with my career. I thoroughly enjoy the freedom of making my own schedule and working with people of my choosing, and I now have the opportunity to publish not only my own books, but books for other authors. If I had not learned the process and the business, I wouldn’t have been in the position to extend an offer to an author whose work I have long admired. And as time goes by, I keep seeing God position me in new ways for new opportunities.
So, I am now both an indie publisher and a small press, and I really love my job. God has continued to open doors for me, and I am thankful for every step of this journey. I really wouldn’t have it any other way.
