In May (which seems a lot longer ago than just one month lol), I did a post on my fave MOMS in kiddy lit as well as middle grade and young adult novels. Since Father’s Day is nigh upon us, I decided to use my Father’s Day freebie Top Ten Tuesday topic to talk about my fave fathers (and father figures) in kids/mg/ya books!
In no particular order….
Papa Berenstain
Chrysanthemum’s Dad
Big Nutbrown Hare
The Man in the Yellow Hat
Mr. Murry
Mr. Quimby
Pa Ingalls
Matthew Cuthbert
Carson Drew
Arthur Weasley
What about you? Who are some of YOUR fave dads in children’s/middle grade/young adult novels?
My oldest daughter just finished reading the entire Little House Series, and her brother has taken to calling her a “farmie.” We’ve started watching the old TV series, too, and I have to admit, I still really l love Pa Ingalls as portrayed by Michael Landon. I was never quite sure whether I wanted him to be my dad or my kids’ dad. đ
Michael Landon IS Pa Ingalls.
any times I have mentioned my love for Nancy Drew so her dad certainly deserves high praise. Carson Drew was so supportive of Nancy. I also loved Charles Ingalls, AKA Pa. Since both of them are examples of perfect father’s, I must mention a father who was imperfect. Gerald O’Hara had a drinking problem but oh, how he loved home Tara and oh, how he loved his Katie Scarlett! Now, my dad didn’t have the drinking problem but he certainly loved his home and his Connie Sue!
Blessings!
Sorry, I just realized that GWTW isn’t YA but I can’t forget Mr. O’Hara đ
that’s ok – I’ll allow it đ LOL
Ohhhh…and excuse to pull out my library storytime lists! Do you know it’s harder to find dad books than mom books? I always struggled to find some for the weeks leading up to Father’s day. Favorite read-a-louds —
Pete’s Pizza by William Steig
Some Dogs Do by Jez Alborough
Papa Do You Love Me by Barbara Jooste
When Daddy Prays by Nikki Grimes
And then there’s the novels that touched me as a kid growing up. And, like you, Matthew Cuthburt was my first thought. And Dr. Murray from Wrinkle in Time. I adore Mathhew. But also:
Cassie’s Papa (David Logan) from Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor
Dr. Wallace Austin in Meet the Austins by Madeleine L’Engle (and all the subsequent Austin books)
Atticus Finch To Kill a Mockingbird — Not really written as a YA book, but I read it in my teens
oooo yay!! What a great list! I’ve heard lots of good things about Pete’s Pizza – i need to check that one out.
Aw, this is such a sweet post! I love so many of these dads. đ
My TTT.
đ
I’ve always wanted to read the Ramona books. Glad to hear that the father is wonderful. Great list!
Such a fun list! I love that the man in the yellow hat made your list–we’ve been reading a lot of Curious George at our house lately đ I really need to reread A Wrinkly in Time. I haven’t since I was in elementary school and I don’t remember anything about it but I’ve seen it on several TTTs this week.
We have several that overlap as well–Mr Weasley (so classic), Matthew Cuthbert, etc. Check out my TTT here: https://greenishbookshelf.com/2017/06/13/top-10-tuesday-favorite-fathers-in-literature/ đ
I love your list too, Jane!! Some of my very faves đ
Pa! And MAtthew! And yes…just all the yeses! The Man in the Yellow Hat – classic!
đ
Papa Berenstain – my childhood there!
Lauren @ Always Me
right? đ
I don’t know about Carson Drew… his daughter gets kidnapped an awful lot. đ LOL
Good list! I would probably add Mortimer from Inkheart.

hahahaha good point!
Aww! How could I forget Papa Berenstain?? One of my favorites from childhood. I read those books ALL THE TIME. (And still have the books.) Yay for Ramona’s dad too! He’s a great character. đ
Mr. Ingalls, and Matthew are equally wonderful, and of course, I have Carson on my list.
Thanks, as always, for visiting Finding Wonderland, Carrie!
I love the dad in “Just in Case You Ever Wonder” by Max Lacado. This is also my all-time favorite children’s book, not to be missed!
I need to re-read that again soon!
