Hi Brandy! Welcome to the blog and to the tour for The Last Summer! I start all of my guests out with a fast four:

apples or oranges

Brandy: Apples. Because they can be dipped in peanut butter.

Carrie: My favorite snack ever! (Well… other than homemade Chex mix but apples with pb are much healthier lol)

winter or summer

Brandy: Winter. Because Christmas.

Carrie: Oh I’m so glad this was your answer. I was a little worried considering the title of your latest book 😉

dogs or cats

Brandy: Cats. I like their independence.

Carrie: But… but …. doggy cuddles and unconditional love and tail wags.

coffee or tea

Brandy: Coffee mostly. I love it. But tea if there are scones!

Carrie: I’d even drink tea if scones were involved. And I hate tea!

Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Brandy: Can I share yours? Because it’s awesome! 🙂 If I could choose any power, I think maybe teleporting would be very cool and come in handy.

Carrie: Only if I can share your teleporting superpower 😉 Except yes of course I’ll share… because reading IS awesome.

Who is your favorite book character from childhood?

Brandy: I’ve loved books for forever, so there are lots of stories, even picture books that are special to me, but I truly loved The Babysitter’s Club SO much when I was young. I think Stacey was my favorite character.

Carrie: Stacey was my fave from that series too! (And it sounds like you already DO have a reading superpower lol)

Do you have any strange writing habits/quirks? Any snacks/beverages that are a must when you sit down to write?

Brandy: When I can block out time to write (usually I’m just sneaking in an hour here or there after the kids go to bed or during nap time) I usually start with a cup of coffee, then another, then I switch to diet soda, then that goes on forever. And I like candy (covers face with hands at that confession). I can eat a million Starbursts or Junior Mints. Being healthy seems to go out the window when I’m deep into a story. And I love writing food into scenes, so I’m hungry a lot during my writing process!

Carrie: LOL! Ok… so now I want to know what your favorite Starburst flavor is.  Mine are the strawberry ones, but I’m equally happy with the new-ish FaveReds bag (which has strawberry and other yummy flavors).

In The Last Summer, Sara and her group of friends have their own ideas about what a ‘perfect summer’ should be like. What is YOUR idea of the perfect summer?

Brandy: I love easy summer mornings where we’re not rushing to get ready and get out of the house. I really enjoy just watching my kids use their imaginations and have adventures in the backyard. We like s’mores in the evenings. I like when everyone is in pajamas early and we have movies and popcorn at home. Living in Colorado, we try to go up and stay in the mountains for at least one weekend during the summer, which is fun and beautiful and great for memory-making. Some summers are busier than others, but I like a free and easy schedule if we can swing it.

Carrie: S’mores!! This interview is making me hungry! LOL

If your heroine Sara Witherspoon could go anywhere for the summer, where would she go and why?

Brandy: Knowing Sara like I do, she’d pick a trip to Europe. She loves architecture and art and history—she appreciates beauty in all forms. I can see her captivated by castles in Scotland, enthralled by gorgeous cathedrals, and smitten with winding rivers by shops and cottages.

Carrie: Oooo can I tag along with her if she goes? That sounds all kinds of delightful.

What do you most want readers to take away from The Last Summer?

Brandy: There are themes of grace and acceptance woven into the story, of course I hope those themes resonate with readers and that they feel encouraged—I also hope readers relate to the characters in one way or another.

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me, Brandy! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Brandy:Thank YOU so much! And I’m currently working a sequel to The Last Summer. I don’t feel quite ready to let these people go yet.

Carrie: That makes me happy! I’m not ready to say goodbye to them either 🙂

I’m not sure I know how to leave meaningful comments. 😀 Thanks, Carrie, for the fun interview with a new-to-me author. Brandy, your book sounds so intriguing. I must put it on my TBR list. And, I LOVE castles in Scotland!

  4. Kay Garrett

Thanks for the interview. I loved reading about THE LAST SUMMER and the author. I especially loved what the author wants us to take from reading the book – grace and acceptance – which we all could use more of. Awesome summer prize pack! Thanks for the chance. <3

I also would love to visit and possibly stay the night in a real castle. someday, I hope to visit Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales and tour as many castles as I can. I’d live in a house with turrets if I could. Smores bring back so many fun and delicious memories on the beach with my kids. I immediately put this book on my TBR. Love the cover–it makes me smile and want to feel the breezes on my face.

  6. Kiera Tate

I agree with the lazy summer days watching the kids use their imagination. I definitely enjoy routine but also enjoy not rushing out of the house 🙂

S’mores are a definite summer staple, I agree. My ideal summer is to relax and try to knock things off my Summer Bucket List. I also would want to go on a trip to Europe – the culture, the food and architecture is something I would love to experience.

The Last Summer sounds like a really good read too (I’m sensing a love triangle/square?). Anyways, I can’t wait to read it. Definitely on the TBR list.

  12. I always ran around with a group of friends in college, and everyone paired off then got married. This story would make me think of those times.

  13. darla
