about the book

Undercover Fiancée

The Pinkerton agent that Edward Kent hired is intelligent, capable—and unexpectedly female! Though shocked to learn that Maggy Worthing will be investigating the threats to his Wyoming horse ranch, Edward needs to find the culprit. And if that means a temporary engagement to give Maggy a cover story, he’ll play along with the feisty detective.

Maggy always gets her man—at least when it comes to solving crimes. The young widow refuses to marry again and land under another husband’s thumb. Unmasking Edward’s enemies will earn her a longed-for promotion…but the heart has its own mysteries. Could working together with the handsome English aristocrat spark a real and loving partnership?

“She’d become the woman who’d successfully breached the walls around his scarred heart.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest historical romance from Stacy Henrie. There’s humor and affection, faith and romance, a dime-novel-loving housekeeper, a British cowboy and a female Pinkerton agent. I mean, really – What’s not to love?

Maggy is such a layered character – from the domestic abuse she suffered in her past to her great success as a detective. Although she still struggles with feelings of worthlessness, she has risen above the unthinkable and broken down gender barriers. I also love that she kept both a strong will and a tender heart. Edward is the delicious combination of two swoony hero-types: the brooding British bachelor and the cowboy. He too struggles with his self-worth and a fear of failure, and I loved the way that he and Maggy help each other find their own sense of value. This tenderly-penned theme – also seen with Maggy’s friend Vienna – is one that many of us need to hear and remember: we aren’t worthless, we aren’t a failure, and we are not what we do or what happens to us.

In between the sweet romance (some great kisses in here!) and the mystery they’re trying to solve and the message of worth in God’s eyes … Henrie adds in some great touches of humor that keep the book from getting too heavy. Lots of moments to make you smile – like Edward’s reaction to Maggy’s impromptu decision about their temporary engagement. Or Mrs. Harvey’s love of dime novels – and how it comes in handy more than once for Maggy’s case. And then there’s the last few pages which just had me grinning ear to ear in delight!

Bottom Line: Peppered with humor and gentle truth, The Rancher’s Temporary Engagement is a great read from start to finish! Henrie’s sense of timing shines, as well as her ability to create dimensional characters who quickly feel like dear friends. The friendship-turned-romance is swoony and sweet, and the suspense gives the plot purpose without overpowering it. Stacy Henrie’s novels are always wonderfully enjoyable, and this one is no exception!

First off I love the cover. It shows two opposite types of people. Is it true that opposites attract? 😉 It fascinates me to think of each of them thinking they have control of the situation, but then attraction enters the equation. Then they have to work through their problems to see if what they really want can come about. Totally amazing storyline and one I’d love to dive right in and start reading.

  2. Perrianne Askew

I like the different storyline, whoever heard of an English cowboy or a female Pinkerton agent in that era? It all sounds like a lot of fun! Thank you formthe giveaway opportunity.

  3. Michelle Connell

This sounds like a fun read even though I don’t read wester /cowboy stories. The mystery with a Pinkerton detective and a British rancher intrigues me.

  4. Thanks for your lovely review, Carrie! Love that these characters felt like dear friends and that the last few pages had you grinning! 🙂 Vienna is the heroine of the next book in the series, but Maggy and Edward are a prominent part of that one too.

I don’t usually read books like this. But after reading the excerpt I am a little more interested in reading it.
