about the book

SERIES: Rocky Mountain Cowboys #3
GENRE: Contemporary Clean Romance
PUBLISHER: Harlequin Heartwarming
RELEASE DATE: April 1, 2018
PAGES: 368

He’s not the only one who needs saving…

But maybe they can save each other?

Dark, brooding, dangerous…and possibly suicidal. Renegade rancher Justin Cade was exactly the kind of man former army chaplain Brielle Thompson needed to avoid after escaping the horrors of Afghanistan with an honorable discharge—and PTSD.

The whole point of moving to the remote Rocky Mountains of Colorado was to leave the darkness behind, not fall back into it.

But falling she is…

“His shadows called to her own.”

First of all, this book may take longer than Karen’s other books just because you have to allow extra time to drool over that cover. SWOON. I love these Cade Cowboys, and bad boy Justin has intrigued me from the beginning. He’s yummy, a cowboy-pirate who loves babies and has a tender heart. In fact, I’m still swooning. His kisses!! WHEW. “He kissed her with the desperation of a dying man who believed the magic of eternal life was in this kiss.” Yep. Still fanning.

But what makes this book one of my faves is the supporting characters. From the patients at Fresh Start to the staff to the people of the town and even the Loveland clan, I laughed a lot. (And please tell me that the Lovelands are part of the Rocky Mountain Cowboys and get their own books?!?) I also got choked up more than once – at Brielle’s own story, Justin’s grief, and the patients’ stories and healing.

Out of all the poignant stories in Bad Boy Rancher, Brielle’s story perhaps most intrigued me, most likely due to the faith struggles she wrestles with. Rock presented these questions authentically and without pat answers, and while it doesn’t dominate the story (this isn’t a Christian fiction novel, after all) it provides a compelling framework for tough questions, the kind that are often yelled from a place of deepest grief or fear. Questions that God doesn’t always answer the way we want but He gives us peace and joy and second chances despite the pain.

Bottom Line: Bad Boy Rancher by Karen Rock is another excellent book in the Rocky Mountain Cowboys series! It doesn’t shy away from gritty issues like PTSD, survivor guilt, addiction, etc. But it also provides plenty of humor and sweet, tender moments. And of course toe-curling swoonliciousness. This is truly a heartwarming story as well as a stellar romance with great character growth. I’m looking forward to more books in this series!

  1. Almost a year ago, we were hanging out in Atlanta and you told me I should read the Harlequin Heartwarming books so I blame you! 😉

Karen Rock’s series has been one of my favorites this year (I’m already petitioning for a Loveland series to follow).

  2. Dianne Casey

I really liked the description of the book and I’m looking forward to reading the series. Great covers!

  3. Kay Garrett

Totally LOVE Karen Rock’s book especially the Rocky Mountain Cowboys series. I can’t wait for #4, #5, and many, many more!

Thanks for the wonderful review and for being part of the tour.

  4. I echo all that you said, Carrie. This is an excellent series – and boy, did Justin and Brielle’s story click with me!

  5. Carrie, I also wanted to mention that Karen wasn’t crazy about this cover and was worried because it didn’t fit the deeply troubled Justin. I do like the guy on the cover, but agree that it’s not Justin.

  6. Winnie Thomas

I like the cover except for the strands of hair hanging down over his one eye. Makes me want to grab my scissors. 😀

Great review, Carrie! This sounds like a wonderful book. I’ve read several of Karen Rock’s books and enjoyed them all.

hahaha i know! I didn’t see that until it was all blown up for the banner and then i’m like forever wanting to brush it off his face. lol

  7. Judy Thomas

Where do you get your cover models from? Because where ever it is I am moving there 🙂

  8. Tina Hairston

Love the excerpt because I love flawed characters. They’re way more interesting than the run of the mill person.
