The lives of moms are all too often consumed with wearisome, empty striving. We work to keep up appearances, meet worldly standards, and find satisfaction in the offerings of this life such as success, admiration, and ease. However, God has set eternity in a mother’s heart, and deep inside, we long for more.
In Heavenly Minded Mom, author and blogger Katie Bennett beckons us into a new way of viewing our present reality by rising above the ordinary and routine to see a bigger plan and purpose for motherhood.
This uplifting book offers moms the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, wrapped in the hope of the Gospel, and presented in bite-sized portions. The 90 compelling meditations, scripture readings, and invitations to journal and reflect, will encourage us to reevaluate how we envision our lives and to claim a heavenly mindset towards our mothering tasks. These inspirational readings will help us discover a new way of looking at our responsibilities as a mom through God’s eyes.
Embrace a simpler life filled with God’s promises and love as you reflect on God’s powerful work as it has woven through your past and present in anticipation of its impact in the future and your spiritual legacy.
Hi Katie! Welcome to the blog!
Katie: Oranges. They are sweet and tangy and refreshing!
Carrie: But they’re so messy! lol
Katie: Summer. I really don’t like being cold, and I love flowers.
Carrie: I love flowers but I hate being hot so I’m still gonna go with winter 😀
Katie: Dogs. I’ve never been around cats much, so I don’t understand them. I find dogs lovable.
Carrie: Me too! ♥
Katie: Coffee. It is rich and comforting.
Carrie: I totally feel that way about how it smells!
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Katie: If I could choose a superpower it would be the power to mobilize my children as cheerful helpers at all times. That would be pretty cool. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can’t.
Carrie: That would be an awesome superpower!
Q: Other than the Bible, what are five of your most cherished books?
Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full by Gloria Furman
The Quiet Disciplines of the Beautiful Woman by Anne Ortlund
Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer
How to Study Your Bible by Kay Arthur
The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones
Carrie: THE JESUS STORYBOOK BIBLE IS MY FAVE! ahem. The fact that I have no children is irrelevant here… lol.
Q: What do you enjoy most about writing?
Katie: I love spreading ideas and making people think. I also enjoy the work of creating. Crafting words and paragraphs to convey an idea is very rewarding, although hard!
Carrie: It’s so hard, but you’re right – it’s so rewarding in the end!
Q: Why write about being a heavenly minded mom? Why is it important to you?
Katie: The theme of Heavenly Minded Mom is that this world and everything we see is passing away, but that is not the end! We have this one chance to live today in a way that truly matters beyond our present moment or our present, fleeting life. Through faith in Christ we can attain eternal life, but that’s not all. We can also impact the kingdom of God through our obedience to Christ and through our love!
We store up treasures in heaven that will last forever as we make sacrifices on behalf of others, persevere in trails, and remain steadfast in our pursuit of holiness. Perspective shows us what is worthwhile and what is not in perfect clarity, and therefore, it gives us the wisdom to live this life with the next life in mind.
The theme of eternal perspective is important to me because it’s the thing that changed my life. I was a Christian who loved the Lord very much from childhood, but I was also fearful of death and distracted by what I wanted out of life. Through a season of deep, difficult reflection on eternity, God opened my eyes to truth and set me free from the many idols that had unintentionally wound their way around my heart. God gave me the faith to put my hope in heaven rather than in an easy life, or fun experiences, or the optimistic wish that nothing too bad would happen.
I know that perspective changes everything.
Carrie: “God gave me the faith to put my hope in heaven rather than in an easy life, or fun experiences, or the optimistic wish that nothing too bad would happen.” – that perspective really does change everything! ♥
Q: What is something that surprised you the most while researching Heavenly Minded Mom?
Katie: I was surprised to realize the theme of eternity is the theme of the Bible. I hadn’t read it through that lens in the past. However, as I re-read the gospels, it struck me that everything Jesus was saying hinged on this very concept. And to think how often we try to ignore it!
Carrie: oh my goodness – that makes me want to start rereading the gospels, looking for that theme!
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Heavenly Minded Mom?
Katie: I want readers to experience a mindset shift — to reframe their thinking around the sometimes-difficult truth of eternity. I believe this changes things deeply, both now and forever. We have one chance to live this life well. This matters urgently!
Carrie: Yes. Amen. ♥
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Katie: We’re having a baby! Our fourth child is due December 2nd, and we are excited!
