I am head over heels for this Rocky Mountain Cowboys series from Karen Rock. The characters. The covers. The setting. The plots. THE KISSES. Blissful sigh.

One of the most intriguing parts of this series for me has been the longstanding feud between the Cades and the Lovelands, a feud made even more complicated by the fact that the Loveland patriarch and the Cade matriarch are about to tie the knot in a very romantic second chance at love. I love Boyd and Joy – although I’d like to knock their heads together a little bit whenever hurt pride sends them back to their own corners for a spell. They are so sweet together, and boy howdy do they have their hands full with the passel of adult children between them – adult children, incidentally, who do not share their respective parent’s warm fuzzy feelings toward the other clan.

In A Cowboy’s Pride, we switch focus from the Cade family (who heretofore have been the protagonists) to the Lovelands – specifically oldest son Cole and his ‘one that got away’, Katlynn. Not only do these two have sizzling chemistry, even after several years apart, but they are smooching each other from the backdrop of a historical mystery that Katlynn is digging up for her documentary TV series. I LOVE THIS!! I love the research aspect of historical mysteries, the search for long-overlooked clues, and the anticipation that builds as the truth gets closer. Rock does a fabulous job with this plot thread, and I love how it all came together.

I also loved Cole and Katie-Lynn together – and the sizzling chemistry I mentioned above. ‘Clean with steam’ is a great way to describe Rock’s Harlequin Heartwarming series. Talk about some swoony kisses! WHEW! Katie-Lynn’s character is one many women can relate to in this image conscious culture, even if we don’t have the added pressure of being on television. Her frank thoughts on the discomfort that goes into creating the facade of perfection – the cosmetic procedures, the shapewear, and other alterations in appearance – is very refreshing… as is the way Cole loves her best when she’s abandoned the ‘Katlynn’ pretense to be more like the Katie-Lynn he almost married. It’s also interesting that, while their feelings for each other haven’t changed, the reasons they didn’t work out the first time haven’t really changed either. This creates some tricky paths for the two to navigate as they weigh the very valid reasons against the very strong feelings, adding authenticity and layers to their story.

Bottom Line: If you haven’t yet met the Cades and the Lovelands, now’s a great time to catch up! This is a series that must not be missed by any fans of swoony kisses, rugged cowboys, and strong heroines. The separate plot threads each are fully dimensional yet they are also seamlessly woven together to create a story you won’t want to put down. I can’t wait to spend more time with this feuding clan of cowboys (and a couple of cowgirls) and see where Rock takes them next!
