The journeys in life take you to unexpected destinations. The love of a good person brings you home.

Kierra Madden, proprietor of the Kindred Lake Inn, struggles for stability after her engagement ends, family strife continues, and business slows. When her mom, sister and teenage niece move in with her, life becomes a lot more complicated. There’s certainly spare room…until one guest arrives…on his bicycle. Ryan Delaney is fit and trim…quite the eye candy.

Ryan, a TV news anchor on a leave of absence following a horrific incident, enjoys the peace long-distance biking offers. Only in town to mend his strained relationship with his teen daughter, he never expects to fall for Kierra fast and hard. Despite her policy of separating business and pleasure, mutual attraction pulls them closer until unforeseen consequences threaten to wedge between them.

Surrounded by springtime beauty, will the temptation of desire bloom into a more powerful and lasting love?

“Knowing you’re loved, and giving that love back, does take the sting out of life.”

Like most of Elaine Stock’s books, When Love Blossoms will appeal to a wide variety of readers. There’s the sweet (if rather quick-moving) romance between Ryan and Kierra, two characters struggling to heal the wounds in their respectively-dysfunctional families. There’s the heart-warming thread involving the journey toward restoration in and between those two families. And there’s even a hint of suspense just to really keep things interesting 😉

One thing I always love about Stock’s books is that she portrays the struggle that often goes hand-in-hand with family, and she does so with authenticity as well as a healthy heaping of grace. She points to the way relationships should be while also acknowledging the reality of brokenness that is, sadly, the norm for many families. There is no judgment in her portrayal, only a light shined in the shadows and an aroma of hope left behind. This is certainly true of When Love Blossoms. Kierra’s struggle to overcome emotional distance with her mother and sister who just moved in with her, along with Kierra’s adolescent niece. Ryan’s battle to break through the walls his daughter has built around her heart after her parents’ divorce. No easy answers, just grace and truth. And hope.

The romance, admittedly, goes from attraction to strong feelings and planning a future in about a minute. While this happens in most romance novels, it feels inordinately quick in When Love Blossoms. However, that doesn’t detract from the touching theme of the book or the sweet way their romance unfolds. You will be cheering for them right from the start because it’s so clear that each character is what the other needs to heal the wounded places in his/her heart.

Bottom Line: When Love Blossoms is another delightful visit to Kindred Lake, but don’t worry if you haven’t yet been there on the pages of Stock’s series. She catches you up quickly so you’ll feel right at home. The characters jump off the page, beckoning you to join them for impromptu manicures in the kitchen or a board game in the library, and I thought the author brilliantly drew the teenagers especially. (You also will find yourself wishing that Anna’s food blog actually exists … or that at least the recipes of the food made in the book would wing its way to you in real life!) A touching theme of restoration, of healing for the deep scars that life leaves behind, undergirds a gentle romance and endearing wit that will keep you smiling throughout.

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4 stars / Love it!

KissingBook Level: 3 / May forget to breathe on occasion

  1. Heartfelt thanks and much appreciation, Carrie, for this lovely review of When Love Blossoms. I’m glad that Kierra and Ryan’s story has touched your heart.

  2. Winnie Thomas

I have this book on my Kindle! I’m hoping to get to it when I get the humongous pile of May/June books I need to read whittled down! Yes, circumstances beyond my control have conspired to put me behind! (Mostly my eager reading eyes are bigger than the time available to read said books!) And Carrie said she couldn’t lend me her reading superpowers because she needs them to whittle her pile down! But I still love you, Carrie!

Elaine, this book sounds wonderful! I’m anxious to get to it. It was such fun seeing you and chatting with you at CFRR!

    • Hi, Winnie!! Yes, it was nice to visit during CFRR–an amazing, spiritual experience in many ways.

I’m thrilled and honored that you have When Love Blossoms in your TBR pile. May I borrow your fab expression: …my eager reading eyes are bigger than the time available to read…books. Love it!! And that’s why I’m not questioning my lack of reason for purchasing not one but two more today. Well, it was in the name of research if you have to know the truth. LOL
