my favorite writing space & writing companions

by Cynthia Hilston, author of Rocks and Flowers In a Box

I guess I’m a little weird because I don’t like to sit at a desk or a table to write. My spot is usually on the carpeted floor of my bedroom, near the window. I can look out the window at the pond beyond the back yard. It’s quiet and secluded, and the only one who joins me is my orange kitty, Tater. He finds me within seconds of me sitting down to write and circles the computer, then settles on my lap.

I usually write in the mid-morning after working out. The kids are all at school, so I have the house to myself. Sometimes a cup of tea or coffee sits nearby…or a piece of chocolate. If the sun isn’t out and it’s cold outside, I’ll light a candle.

When I’m out and about, I’ll duck into Starbucks or Panera. I prefer the quiet of Panera over the blare of voices and music in Starbucks, but I love a good tall non-fat latte from Starbucks, so it’s a toss-up sometimes.

Other times, I find a high-topped table at the Y where I work out and set my laptop up there and work. It’s a great alternative to home when I can get a workout in and put my kids in the child watch there for a couple of hours. They get to have fun, and so do I!

When it comes to editing and critiquing, I’m part of two groups. One meets in the library and one at a good friend’s house. My writer friends not only talk about writing and critique each other’s work, but we often meet up for lunch at a tavern or at someone’s house. We paint our nails and drink wine. Or we go wine tasting. Or get coffee. It often depends on the time of day.

In her spare time – what spare time? – she devours books, watches Supernatural and Outlander, pets her orange kitty, looks at the stars, drinks wine or coffee with good friends, and dreams of what other stories she wishes to tell.
