THE RETURN OF THE KING’S RANGER
SERIES:
Hearts at War #4
GENRE: Inspirational Historical Romance
PUBLISHER: White Rose Publishing
RELEASE DATE: August 23, 2019
PAGES: 213

The war for American freedom is over, and the British have gone back to England. Not knowing what has become of his family since he was forced into the Continental Army nine years earlier, Myles Cunningham wants to go home as well. He returns to the Mohawk Valley with the understanding that he is believed to have been shot for deserting—fiction that might be made real if anyone recognizes him as the son of a Tory and a King’s Ranger.

Everything is wonderful in the growing community along the Mohawk River, except Nora Reid is still alone. With her brother happily settled and both her younger sisters starting families of their own, Nora feels the weight of her twenty-four years. A long walk leads her to the overgrown rubble of the Cunningham homestead where a bearded stranger begins to awaken feelings she’d lost hope of ever experiencing.

With secrets abounding—including whether Myles even cares for her—Nora must determine what she is ready to give up and how far she will go to secure his affections. She begins to break through his defenses, but Myles can’t risk staying. Not if he loves her.

“Nora?” The questioning in his gaze almost undid her. How could she have let herself become so enamored by this man? He’d hardly opened his past to her. Now she understood why.

“It is best you leave, Mr. Crawford.”

Myles appeared as though he wanted to argue but nodded. He turned to Buckethead and lifted his foot to the stirrup. He was halfway into the saddle when he reversed. “One thing before I go.”

“Wha—”

His mouth caught hers, at first with startling intensity, and then growing gentle.

Oh, Myles. She couldn’t help the ache in her soul, the longing he evoked in her. Besides…it was goodbye. Nora allowed her hands to touch his face, brushing back over his whiskers to the back of his head. Was there any harm in one last kiss? To forget for one moment who either of them was? It was like living someone else’s story. Soon they would turn the page and the book would end, but for now, they could immerse themselves in this fairy tale.

The ties of his eye patch brushed against her wrist and her mouth followed her thoughts, up his jaw to the scars at the corner of his eye. His own lips warmed her neck and sent fire through her.

She eased away enough to look at him.

He searched her face in return.

“May I…?” With her question, she caught the tie with her fingers and slowly pulled. She felt him tense, but he didn’t move or hardly blink as the eye patch fell away. Her attempt to brace herself was not enough to keep her lungs from quickly expanding. She touched his face. Yes, there were scars, but his eye appeared whole. Was the patch nothing more than a part of his disguise?

To keep from freezing in the Great White North, Angela K Couch cuddles under quilts with her laptop. Winning short story contests, being a semi-finalist in ACFW’s Genesis Contest, and a finalist in the International Digital Awards also helped warm her up. As a passionate believer in Christ, her faith permeates the stories she tells. Her martial arts training, experience with horses, and appreciation for good romance sneak in there, as well. When not writing, she stays fit (and warm) by chasing after four munchkins.

I have not read any of this series, but it sounds interesting! That time post revolutionary war must have been hard with some colonist not to happy with the outcome.

  2. Kay Garrett

Enjoyed the excerpt and would love the opportunity to read “THE RETURN OF THE KING’S RANGER” to read the rest of Myles and Nora’s story.

  3. The summary describes a rich, well-developed story with connected characters. I think it would be nice to disappear into this world for a while!

This book sounds like it would be a historical spy read and since I love to read historical spy books, it sounds perfect to me.
