PAWS FOR MURDER
SERIES:
Barking Mad Mysteries #1

GENRE: Cozy Mystery
RELEASE DATE: January 5, 2020
PAGES: 163

Welcome to Adlebury where village life can be downright deadly.

Veterinarian Petronella Knight seems to have it all. A job she loves, good friends, and patients who adore her. But when she gets into an argument with dog breeder Gladys Harrington, and she finds the woman dead, she also finds herself accused of murder.

Ella will need all her friends, including the new and very handsome American policeman, and all her sharpest sleuthing skills to figure out who murdered the dog breeder before another dead body pops up.

Paws for Murder contains one enthusiastic amateur detective with a penchant for rescuing animals, a guard duck called George, a large amount of homemade gooseberry wine, and a very confused American who has never met an English village quite like this one.

You’d be Barking Mad to pass this one by.

“Considering both countries were supposed to speak English, it was like a whole other language.

What a fun series debut this was to read!

Everything from the quaint English village setting to the charmingly befuddled (but sharp! and handsome!) American detective to the plucky veterinarian heroine who makes gooseberry wine to the guard duck named George – it’s endearing and witty and all-around entertaining. The characters are vivid and layered, and I look forward to spending more time with them in future books. I also loved the dual POV that we get in this book – the perspective shifts between Garrett and Petronella so we really feel like we get to know them well by the end of the story. Garrett’s grandmother Lillie – who is also a friend to Petronella – was also a delight to meet on the pages.

The mystery in Paws for Murder is extremely well-written and cleverly plotted. It kept me guessing through the whole book – and with as many mysteries as I read and grew up reading, that’s not easy to do. A host of plausible suspects with even more plausible motives … as well as some unlikely suspects … filter through the investigation, and it takes some surprising turns along the way too.

Bottom Line: Paws for Murder is a delightful read from start to finish and was a fabulous start to what looks to be an equally delightful series. The lovely setting, the engaging characters, the smart plotting, and the witty writing style are strengths of this story, and it’s a quick read overall too. Definitely recommended for fans of cozy and/or British mysteries!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4 stars / Love it!

Reviewer’s Note: Readers may want to be aware that there are some mild curse words scattered throughout this novel.

Scarlett English is a crazy cat lady who likes solving mysteries. Or actually, make that a dog lady. Much to her chagrin, the police have never sought to consult her, which is why there seems to be so much unsolved crime. Especially—surprisingly enough—in the small English village where she lives. So, armed with curiosity, a penchant for taking in strays, a love of homemade wine and a good gossip, she puts her detecting talents to good use murdering her imaginary friends and neighbors and solving the cases one story at a time.
