choosing the setting

by Lisa Harris, author of The Traitor’s Pawn

One of my favorite things about writing a novel is choosing the setting. Sometimes the story chooses the location, and sometimes the setting chooses the story. For The Traitor’s Pawn, I knew that I wanted it set in Texas, somewhere I lived for many years. I also knew that the opening scene was going to be a hunting scene, so I needed somewhere swampy. It didn’t take long for me to decide on the beautiful Texas coast.

The wetlands outside of Corpus Christi offer lots of duck hunting opportunities and was the perfect setting for my opening chapter where my heroine finds herself in a dangerous situation. I researched the marshes, black mangroves, and shallow water bays full of waterfowl and discovered a beautiful slice of Texas that worked perfectly for my story. These coastal marshes are like a web of grasslands where small boats can maneuver through the narrow waterways, and as you can see from the photo, the sunrises and sunsets can be stunning.

Later in the book, my hero and heroine have to drive from Corpus Christi to San Antonio, a city I’ve visited a number of times. I wanted a chase scene and what better place than the River Walk in the heart of San Antonio. For those of you who haven’t been there, the river walk is a shady network of walkways that follows the banks of the San Antonio River and is lined with shops and restaurants. It’s been referred to at times as the American Venice. There aren’t any gondolas, but you can take a boat down the river, and even eat a meal on a river barge.

Last fall, I spent a week there with my friend and fellow author, Lynne Gentry, and we had an intense week-long writing retreat. It was the perfect setting for writing sprints and brainstorming. When we weren’t writing, we spent time on the Riverwalk where we ate Mexican food, and enjoyed the perfect weather before heading back to our hotel and starting the writing process all over again.

While I missed it this past year, one of the most beautiful times to visit the River Walk is during its annual Christmas lighting display. And in case you wondered, yes, people have fallen into the river—including someone in my story. The depth of the river ranges from about two feet to twenty-four feet, and each year when they drain and clean the river, they find everything from silverware to sunglasses to furniture!

Thanks for letting me take you on a short tour of my story’s setting. Happy reading!

As a current Texan, I love the Texas Gulf coast region! It’s always nice to have your home state represented in a book. I’m looking forward to reading it!

  2. Lisa Stillman

I love the genre of the book; and I miss TX, so I’m always happy when it shows up in the setting of the book.

Corpus Christi is just a couple of hours away from me. I haven’t visited since one of my aunts lived there several years ago. I enjoy reading stories set in my home state.

Lisa Harris is one of my must read authors! 🙂

It sounds like great suspense read with a well-researched setting. I may live in Texas but the swampland of Corpus Christi is strange to me. I’m more familiar with the Great Plains.

I would like to visit the River Walk in San Antonio. Since none of us can go anywhere right now, at least I can visit through this book’s pages.

Have always wanted to visit Texas, especially San Antonio & the River Walk. Most Texas romances that I’ve read are set out on ranches, & I love them. They’ll tease us with a taste San Antonio when the couple sightsee the town. Glad that I’ll see more of the town & learn about the coastal marshes & wildlife! Are there gators?
