You’re never too old for fun, faith, or love.

Lavinia Lewis is a wealthy southern widow who enjoys a good prank. But when a resident at her posh retirement community in Southport, North Carolina gets sick at a potluck, Lavinia’s reputation as a jokester lands her in big trouble. How can she clear her name when her own daughter doesn’t believe she’s innocent?

Neville McGrath is a long-in-the-tooth lawyer, afraid of being put out to pasture. Torn between his nephew’s offer to move to Maine to live with him and his desire to keep working, Neville discovers other options when he takes Lavinia’s case.

The jokes keep her young, but Lavinia remembers the true source of joy as she faces criminal charges. Can she help Neville find his faith for the first time, and can they both find love at eighty-years-old?

A humorous and inspirational story with lovable characters, a beautiful setting, fun mystery, sweet romance, family drama, and an ending that will leave you sighing in satisfaction.

One of my favorite things about Shenanigans is the setting of Southport, North Carolina! So far, all my books have been set in my home state, and I love sharing the beauty of it through my words. But this is the first time I’ve used a real city as the setting. In Grace & Lavender, Springville is a fictional town modeled after my hometown of Elkin in the foothills (Piedmont region.) In Where I Was Planted, Copper Creek is a fictional town set in the Mountains, near Great Smoky Mountains National Park. So, I knew right away that Shenanigans needed to be set at our magnificent coast, and Southport was the perfect place!

For several years, my family has vacationed with my husband’s parents on Oak Island, which is across the bridge from Southport. We were thrilled when they bought a vacation home there a few years ago, and it has provided us with the opportunity to spend lots of time in the area. It’s become tradition to make our way to downtown Southport on most trips and visit the little shops, parks, and restaurants that make this town so iconic. It was a thrill to feature many of them in the story.

Just like Lavinia and her late husband, Edgar, in the story, my husband and I have daydreamed about retiring to Southport some day. (But I’m a mountain girl, too, so it’s a tough call!) I hope the setting of the book makes readers want to visit this two-hundred-fifty-year-old port town nicknamed “The Home of Salubrious Breezes.”

Here are a few of the places featured.

Provision Company Restaurant:

This seasonal, waterfront outdoor eatery is where Neville takes Lavinia to interview her as part of an investigation into a legal matter. That’s how things start out anyway…

The Christmas House:

I’ve purchased an ornament from this shop each time a new child has been added to our family. In the last chapter of the book, Lavinia requests a special gift from here.

Bull Frog Corner:

My kids love visiting this toy, candy, and souvenir shop. In the book, Lavinia picks up a treat here for her mute friend, Rosie.

Waterfront Park and City Pier:

Anyone that’s visited Southport probably has made a stop here, at the majestic venue where the Cape Fear flows out to the Atlantic. A couple of very important scenes in the book take place here.

Dutchman Creek Park:

My family loves this park. I have some great pictures of my kids playing here. Just beyond the awesome playground is a little beach and beautiful Dutchman Creek. In Shenanigans, this is the site for a very funny scene!

Thanks for going on a tour with me! It’s a joy to share this special place.

I’m interested in the romance between the 80 year-olds. I’m curious how you portrayed it since it will be so different than a young love. I’m 66 & wish I could find a second love, but think I’m too old!
