Writing is a unique career. I don’t always know what experiences will go into creating each story. Sometimes, I think I have my story all figured out. Then something happens, and the whole story changes. This happened with Plain Refuge.
Early last summer, my family decided to take a short vacation. All three of my kids were home, and the weather was gorgeous, just perfect for an adventure. My kids decided they wanted to try white water rafting. Now, first of all, this was not at the top of the list of things I wanted to learn. I am not a strong swimmer. However, I went along with it. I set aside my writing for a few days. We booked a guided tour, which made me feel a little safer. There would be 7 of us: my husband and I, our two sons, our daughter and her best friend, and the guide.
As the guide started going through all the safety protocols and rules, I started having second thoughts, but there was no way I was going to back out. It turned out to be a lot of fun. And quite an adrenaline rush. I would go as far to say that I would willingly go again.
There is one part of the trip, however, that I will not do again. Not ever. We stopped about midway through at Jump Off Rock. That was literally the name. It was a rock cliff that we climbed up and jumped off into the water below. My kids all loved it. I thought it was terrifying. I was never so happy to get into a boat.
When I sat down to continue writing Plain Refuge, I remembered the emotions I had felt during the trip. I remembered the instructions from the guide. As I recalled the experience, I realized that my heroine had a fear of water. I was going to test her strength and make her face her fear during the story.
This addition to the story completely changed where the story was headed and how it ended. I could have stuck with my original plot, but it wouldn’t have felt right. Sometimes, you just have to trust and take a leap of faith. When the story was done and I read through it again, it wasn’t the story I had started out to tell, but I trust it was the story that I was meant to write.
