Please join me in welcoming Marissa Shrock to the blog today to chat about her new mystery Deadly Hideaway!
Marissa Shrock is a survivor of many awkward blind dates and many years of teaching middle school. Both provide excellent inspiration for her fictional yarns.
Since childhood, she’s loved to read a variety of genres, so her own work includes dystopian thrillers and cozy mysteries. She’s the author of the Emancipation Warriors Series and the Georgia Rae Winston Mystery Series. Her debut novel, The First Principle, was a Carol Award Finalist.
Marissa enjoys playing golf, building elaborate LEGO creations, and traveling to new places. Her home is in Indiana, where she’s surrounded by corn and soybean fields.

She soon learns the dead man’s in-laws didn’t like him much. And the gossip around town says he’s been having an affair. Suspect. Motive. Simple case, right?

Hi Marissa! Welcome to the blog!
Marissa: Coffee. I get a better caffeine buzz from coffee, and it helps me be perky for my middle school students early in the morning. They probably wonder what’s wrong with me when I seem really, really enthusiastic about participles.
Marissa: Hallmark Channel. I like the escapism and happy endings. (Well, except for that incident on When Calls the Heart which shall not be discussed! 🙁 ) I’ve actually watched some of Hallmark Channel’s shows on Netflix, so that’s why Hallmark wins.
Carrie: yes, let’s not discuss that incident. ugh!
Marissa: Over! It’s easier to reach.
Carrie: that is a valid point… but still under. lol.
Marissa: eBooks. I like the portability and being able to immediately start reading the next book in a series without having to wait on shipping. This doesn’t speak well of my patience, does it?
Carrie: haha i don’t think patience should be a determining factor on character when books are involved 😀
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Marissa: If I had a superpower, I’d want the ability to write a novel that’s totally and completely ready for publication in one week.
Carrie: that would be lovely!
Q: Tell me some good books you’ve read recently.
Marissa: Moondrop Miracle by Jennifer Lamont Leo, Convenient Lies by Robin Patchen, and Airborne by DiAnn Mills
Carrie: ooo all of those are on my TBR pile – can’t wait!
Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?
Marissa: My favorite writing spot is the screened-in porch on the back of the house. It has a view of the woods, and I can see plenty of birds, squirrels, and even the occasional deer. In the spring and late fall, I set up a space heater just so I can work there.
Carrie: that sounds delightful! Especially since it can be temperature controlled 🙂
Q: What surprised you about this book or your characters as you wrote Deadly Hideaway?
Marissa: While I was writing Deadly Hideaway, the newest book in my Georgia Rae Winston Mystery Series, I had a quirky character who seemed to stand up and demand her own mystery series. I’d like to get to know her better, so we’ll see what the future holds after I finish Georgia’s series.
Carrie: quirky characters who demand (and get) their own spinoff series are always fun!
Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?
Marissa: If I could plot everything out in advance, I would because I think it would probably save time. However, I really struggle with doing what, so I let the characters dictate what comes next. With a mystery this means I have to do a lot of slow, tedious revision, but the process seems to be the way the works best for me.
Carrie: I imagine a mystery has to be written that way more than other genres – because of the very nature of the plot.
Q: What is something God taught you while you wrote Deadly Hideaway?
Marissa: In Deadly Hideaway, my main character Georgia Rae Winston visits the fictional Lake Hideaway in Northern Indiana because she’s looking for a haven from her problems, but of course, trouble finds her. One of the lessons she learns in this story is to let God alone be her refuge. This was a good reminder for me to commit Psalm 62:8 to memory: Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
Carrie: That’s such a timely reminder in our current world, with all the uncertainty and discouragement at every turn. I needed it too!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Marissa: I’m working on the sixth and final book in the Georgia Rae Winston Mystery Series, Deadly Heartbreak. I’m also planning to write a new cozy mystery series.
