For one journalist, the story of a lifetime is hitting too close to home
Sarah Denning is a military journalist with the Army in the Middle East when she is taken hostage. When former Army Ranger Gavin Black is asked by his old unit commander–Sarah’s imposing father–to plan an extremely risky rescue, he reluctantly agrees and successfully executes it.
Back in the US, Sarah is livid when she’s discharged on a false psychiatric evaluation and vows to return to the Army. Until she learns of her brother’s suicide. Unable to believe her brother would do such a thing, she puts her plans on hold and enlists Gavin to help her discover the truth. What they uncover may be the biggest story of Sarah’s career–if she can survive long enough to write it.
Hi Lynette! Welcome back to the blog!
Q: What is the first book you can remember that captivated you as a reader?
Lynette: One of the first mysteries I ever read. It was a Nancy Drew book.
Carrie: i love that! Nancy Drew was definitely one of the first for me too.
Q: Who are some authors/books that have influenced your writing (and/or spiritual) journey?
Lynette: There have been way too many to list, but a sampling would be Dee Henderson, Gayle Roper, Terri Blackstock, Colleen Coble, Lee Child, James Patterson and more.
Carrie: I spy several of my faves in that list too!
Q: Why do you love writing romantic suspense?
Lynette: I love all things law enforcement and I love a good mystery. Combining those allows me to do mega amounts of research (also a favorite) and hopefully come up with a story that readers will love.
Carrie: …and we do love them!
Q: In Acceptable Risk, which character was most difficult to write ā Sarah or Gavin ā and what made it difficult?Ā
Lynette: Sarah was probably more difficult than Gavin. Mostly because she came from a dysfunctional family with a father she couldnāt relate toāor even like. My father is the greatest and I love him dearly. Whenever I have to write about characters with hard childhoods, itās hard for me to relate. Gavin came from a loving home and had a good relationship with his parents so he was a bit easier to write about.
Carrie: I have the same kind of father as you do, so I bet that would be difficult to put yourself in Sarah’s shoes as you write.
Q: Can you share 3 to 5 behind-the-scenes facts about Acceptable Risk?
Lynette:
The compound where Sarah was held captive is a real one. I just renamed it.
The drug I used in AR is a real experimental drug. Itās still not approved by the FDA and I made up my own side effects to go with the story.
I brainstormed this story with Colleen Coble, Carrie Stuart Parks, Voni Harris, Robin Carroll, Pam Hillman and Karen Solem at a brainstorming retreat in AZ. I couldnāt do what I do without brainstorming buddies.
Carrie: so cool! And I totally want to crash that retreat. I’ll be your reader guinea pig š
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Acceptable Risk?
Lynette: I want them to be so engrossed in the story that they canāt put the book down until they finish it. If they lose sleep, Iāve done my job.
Carrie: Mission accomplished!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! š Before we say goodbye for today, tell us whatās coming up next for you.
Lynette:Ā Iām working on Book #4 in the Danger Never Sleeps series. This is Cadenās and Avaās story and Iām having a lot of fun writing it!
