Hi Janice! Welcome to the blog!

Janice: Summer. Winter is too cold up here in Canada.

Carrie: Summer is much too hot here – I’ll happily trade you 🙂

Janice: Audiobooks. Always story first.

Carrie: I wish I enjoyed audiobooks more for that very reason!

Janice: Neither. I don’t like pop/soda or even sparkling water.

Carrie: oh goodness, again i wish i could say the same – sadly, i am rarely to be found without a diet coke lol

Janice: I’ve switched to ebook for ease of acquisition and reading.

Carrie: I mostly have too – i do still buy print of my faves though 😀

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Janice: I’m with you. Reading has to be my superpower.

Carrie: YAY! I happily share that one!

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Janice: Either cozy mysteries or my favourite authors (Anne Perry, Louise Penny, etc.)

Carrie: Louise Penny has been recommended to me a lot lately!

Q: Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found your characters in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

Janice: Not recent, but at one point, I needed someone in my story to take care of sick children when character S left, and my husband suggested a sister for S. I added her in a few places and it all worked out for the best. My hubby is my idea man.

Carrie: aww i love that 🙂

Q: Which of your main characters in Calm Before the Storm is most like you?

Janice: The main character, Katya. She is ordinary. I did this on purpose, so ordinary people like me could more easily identify with her.

Carrie: we ordinary people enjoy characters we can relate to, for sure!

Q: What surprised you about the story or your characters as you wrote Calm Before the Storm

Janice: My Russian peasant, Paul Gregorovich, was supposed to make an appearance to add credibility to the relationship between the Russian people and the Mennonites settled there, but Paul refused to leave. He stayed with the story for all three books.

Carrie: haha! Well now I can’t wait to meet him!

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Calm Before the Storm?

Janice: Beyond learning more about the history of the Russian Mennonites, I want people of every culture to see the sovereignty and all-encompassing love of God in the lives of humankind.

Carrie: I’m so looking forward to this read

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Janice: Once I’m finished with Calm Before the Storm (a re-release from 2002), I plan to get back to work on the first draft of my cozy mystery, Crazy About Maisie (Happenstance Chronicles #2). The first draft is complete, more or less, and the manuscript has reached “the bland soup stage.” It needs lots of additions, rounded sub-plots, properly timed clues, and warmth. There is much to do. I will also be writing a short story for the Mosaic Collection Christmas Anthology, something hinged on “a letter,” and eventually do a re-edit on the second Storm book for November. It’s a little scary when I think about all the work ahead!

Carrie: at least you won’t be bored haha

  1. Great interview! I can’t wait to read this one! I loved Janice’s “Happenstance” book, a contemporary with Mosaic, and I know so little about Russian history that I’m quite intrigued! Happy book-launch week!

  2. Suzanne Sellner

I love historical fiction works, so I’m looking forward to learning more about Russian history. Like Janice Dick, I also love Louise Penny books!

  3. Roxanne C.

I never knew until today that Mennonites had lived in Russia. I am very interested in reading the series.

  4. IRENE

Good title. They couldn’t have imagined how great the storm would be! Like historical fiction…. Painless & interesting way to learn more about history!
