What Reading & Writing Books Means to Me
by Lisa Jordan, author of A Love Redeemed
My love of reading grew from an early age. I remember my mom reading us Bible stories before bed. When I learned to read in first grade, that opened me up to worlds limited only by my imagination. Reading became my escape when life grew hard. I solved mysteries with Nancy Drew, went down the rabbit hole with Alice, and went on many adventures with Ramona and Beezus. And I fell in love over and over again while reading First Love novels by Silhouette Books.
However, my passion for reading took me on a new adventure, a calling placed on my heart at the age of 16. After sneaking The Promise by Danielle Steel off my stepmom’s shelf and reading it when she wasn’t home, I finished the book, clutched it to my chest, and while standing in the middle of the living room, I decided at that moment I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to create that same heart-sigh for my readers as I had experienced after reading Michael and Nancy’s happily ever after moment.
I’ve been a happily-ever-after girl for as long as I can remember, so writing romance was a no-brainer. My first attempt was written on notebook paper when I was in 10th grade called The Boss’s Son. Since then, I’ve learned a lot and I’ve grown as a writer.
My writing dream became a reality when my fairy godmother agent, Rachelle Gardner, called me on January 7, 2011 at 3 PM to say, “Lisa, today is your lucky day.” I sobbed so hard my husband thought someone had died. Since that life-changing day, I’ve published seven novels with Love Inspired with more to come.
Writing offers me three things:
- A deeper relationship with God—writing doesn’t come easily to me. I struggle with getting the story pieces together and finding the right words to convey what’s in my heart. By trusting God with my career and leaning on Him, especially during deadlines, I’ve grown closer because I am weak but He is strong. He reveals Himself to be in breath-taking ways, and I’m a better Christian, wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and writer because of His never-ending, unchanging grace.
- A ministry—I have no doubt in my heart that God called me to be a writer at the age of 16…even though I didn’t realize it at the time. He shaped me and molded me through life’s trials and challenges, which enables me to put those experiences to paper and minister in His name to readers who may be experiencing similar situations. I have friends and family who do not attend church, but they will read my books. My books are published in other countries. While I have not been called to minister to less fortunate in Swaziland or Belize or China, I can show God’s love and grace through my stories.
- Life-changing relationships—throughout my writing journey, I have met people who have changed my life for the better. Readers who send encouraging notes when I’m struggling with the next book, writing friends who have become some of my best friends, mentors and industry professionals who have poured their wisdom and knowledge into me. All of these relationships have strengthened my faith and strengthened my writing. My writing mentors have challenged me and believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. My writing tribe prays with me and encourages me when life’s difficulties stand in the way of my dream.
A young, very ordinary, country girl from a very small town in Pennsylvania fell in love with reading, and that opened a door beyond her wildest imagination. By serving a God so much greater than herself, her dream of seeing her name on a book cover became a reality because she obeyed the call God placed on her heart on a very ordinary summer’s day.
So, if you have a dream, give it up to God, and trust Him to make that dream a reality…it just may blow your socks off because we serve a God who is glorified when we tell of the great things He has done through us.
