Hi Joan! Welcome to the blog!
Joan: DOGS – They tend to be more affectionate to their people, and find great joy in just “being together.” Cats tend to be more independent, and give back when they decide to. 😊
Carrie: I completely agree!
Joan: MUSIC – I am from a musical family, and play the piano myself. I find pleasure in many genres of music.
Carrie: I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the piano!
Joan: OCEAN – I used to live near the Rocky Mountains of CO and loved snow skiing. Now that I’m older, I live near the Atlantic Ocean, and love to walk on the beach, especially at sunrise or sunset. Spectacular. Awesome. Glory of the creation revealed.
Carrie: My ideal place to live is a mountain coast off the ocean 🙂
Joan: PRINT – I tend to cherish my books, highlighting, and underlining treasured lines.
Carrie: i do that with ebooks but not with print lol
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Joan: I love to encourage people. Life can be tough and my superpower is to listen and offer hope.
Carrie: i love that ♥
Q: Other than the Bible, what are some of your most cherished books?
Joan: Madeleine L’Engle’s personal life stories: A Circle of Quiet, and A Two-Part Invention; The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (and the rest in the series) by C.S. Lewis, Her Mother’s Hope, Marta’s Legacy Series #1 by Francine Rivers
Carrie: love those authors!
Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever Googled while researching a book?
Joan: The deadliest jellyfish in the world found in the waters around Australia. Of the 50 or so species of box jellyfish, also called sea wasps, only a few have venom that can be lethal to humans. It can kill a person in a couple of minutes before help can arrive, in most cases. I was able to interview a researcher at the Cairn University to prepare for writing a nonfiction book for educational publishing. Very cool!
Carrie: oh wow!
Q: What surprised you about His Gift or your characters as you wrote their story?
Joan: Since the story was based on a true event in my mother’s life, I felt I needed to distance myself from her character in order to let my fictional heroine develop into her own person. It helped me do so by naming her Molly as opposed to my mother’s real name, Milly. The surprising part was how Molly truly became her own vibrant self as she responded to the tumultuous conflict caused by The Great Depression.
Carrie: i love how you let her become her own person
Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote His Gift?
Joan: Yes, the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto in C Minor. It is a romantic, yet melancholy, passionate piece of Russian music. At the beginning of my writing, my book’s working title was A Haunting Melody. Even if you aren’t into classical music, this amazing composition is worth a listen.
Carrie: it definitely is!
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from His Gift?
Joan: I want people to have hope even when they face obstacles or even experience great losses. When yielding our dreams to the Giver of all dreams, we can find peace and purpose for living.
Carrie: Amen ♥
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Joan: I am working on a book about young women in crisis. I worked for three years as a trained counselor at a women’s resource center, and it is through their stories and tears that I once again write to offer hope and a light to those struggling in the darkness.
Thank you for the privilege of talking with you! 😊
