Hi Monique! Welcome back to the blog!
Monique: Netflix—though I love the Hallmark channel. I don’t really watch much of anything. When I do—I love Christmas Movies and the type of movies that play on Hallmark channel –but I don’t have cable.
Carrie: We dropped cable a long time ago, too, but I made sure to find a streaming service that included the Hallmark mysteries channel lol
Monique: Neither—Dr. Pepper all the way
Carrie: fair enough 🙂
Monique: Sandwich—I love sub sandwiches with meat and cheese. I’m not a fan of most vegetables on a sandwich.
Carrie: I agree – veggies don’t belong on a sandwich!
Monique: Card games—I enjoy both—but my family tends to gravitate to card games more quickly.
Carrie: we love both too
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Monique: Writing books people of all ages enjoy.
Carrie: that’s a good superpower to have!
Q: Who is your favorite book character from childhood?
Monique: At first it was Laura Ingalls Wilder, then Beverly Cleary’s Ramona (who inspired my character Ginnie West), and then Leslie from Bridge to Terabithia.
Carrie: I adore Ramona!
Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?
Monique: On my bed.
Carrie: my fave place to read!
Q: What surprised you about Simply West of Heaven or your characters as you wrote their story?
Monique: I once attended a writing workshop with David Farland (AKA the Wizard of Storytelling). He suggested that sometimes he interviews his characters and asks them why they want to be in his book and suggested we interview one of our characters.
I interviewed Ginnie and told her she would have her own horse, has a twin brother, a great BFF, would live on a farm and such—she was excited at first, but at the end of the interview told me that SHE would get back to ME about whether she wanted to be in my book or not. UMMM?!?!?!?
On a side note—this interview happened while writing: Simply West of Heaven: A Ginnie West Adventure (this book) so it worked out—but that’s how Ginnie is. 🙂
Carrie: haha she sounds like a handful! 🙂
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Simply West of Heaven?
Monique: One theme I have in all of my books is that things are not always what they seem. For most experiences involving more than one person—quite often there is each person’s view and then there is the whole truth.
What you look for (and sometimes what you dwell on) is only what you see. And while there is truth in that perception—sometimes there is a bigger truth that needs to be considered and acknowledged. Life is seldom completely black or white.
Carrie: very true!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Monique: I am working on the 5th book in the Ginnie West series and the first book in my family drama series. Here is a quick blurb:
When his parents return from their second honeymoon in mahogany caskets, nineteen year-old Cale Ryder inherits his three teenage brothers, his kid sister, Brandi, as well as their family ranch. Fast-tracked to fatherhood, Cale doesn’t have time for a lot of nonsense and quickly lets everyone know there’s only room for one alpha dog in the fight to keep the family together. Cale tries not to wonder what life would be like if he could do what he wanted, instead of what everyone else needs.
Thank you for hosting my book, Simply West of Heaven on your blog. 🙂
