Hi Tessa! Welcome to the blog!
Tessa: Winter. Although that is a little difficult, considering summer is special in its own way. But the humidity in the south, where I live, can often be far too much to bear. Winter, on the other hand, is cozy. Christmas is magical. Plus, winter is the perfect season to stay indoors and read a good book by the fireplace, sipping on a hot latte. 😉
Carrie: Yes! I agree 100%
Tessa: Coffee. Nothing can ever come close to comparing!
Carrie: so i’ve heard lol
Tessa: Mountains. I do love the ocean, so really, this is a close call. But my happy place is in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Especially this time of year, in the fall, when the changing leaves beckon me to rent a cabin so I can bask in the splendor of autumn. 🙂
Carrie: YES!! Girl, me too. Those mountains are my happy place too.
Tessa: Card game. I’ve never been a huge fan of board games, but I could play card games for hours.
Carrie: there are a lot of card games we love too – but we love board games too.
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Tessa: The ability to travel through time. How cool would it be to witness historical events firsthand and experience what it was like to live through different eras? I’d also love to go back and meet my ancestors. Then I’d return to present day with credible research that I could draw upon to write realistic historical fiction.
Carrie: Wouldn’t that be fabulous?!?
Q: Tell me some good books you’ve read recently.
Tessa: The Wedding Dress and The Wedding Shop by Rachel Hauck. I’ve been binge reading her books for the past year or so because I can’t seem to get enough!
Carrie: those are some fabulous books – and The Wedding Chapel too!
Q: Do you have any strange writing habits/quirks? Any snacks/beverages that are a must when you sit down to write?
Tessa: One word: Coffee. 😉 I’ve always been a coffee fanatic, and there’s something cozy about working on a book while sipping on a creativity- and word-count-igniting latte. I’ll never understand how non-coffee-drinking authors reach their deadlines without it!
Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote Love Your Selfie?
Tessa: There isn’t a specific song that inspired the book; however, I do think that the song “Gold” by Britt Nicole offers the same message to teen girls as Love Your Selfie. I, too, hope girls will learn how to confidently embrace their identity in Christ and believe the truth of who He says they are as opposed to the lies that others may have fed them.
Carrie: Amen. Yes!
Q: What is one of your favorite quotes from Love Your Selfie & why do you love it?
Tessa: “God doesn’t just want us to use our gifts; He needs us to use them. Not so that people can notice our strength and beauty, but so that they can see His strength and beauty within us. Each of us plays a key role in preparing this world for the return of our King.”
This quote summarizes the message of Love Your Selfie. No, I don’t want to encourage teen girls to love themselves for the sake of promoting their pride or selfish desires. Rather, it’s my hope that, as they step into their God-given identity, they will discover that they have been created with intention. Each gift, skill, and strength of theirs has been assigned so that they can further their role in God’s Kingdom. Yet in order for teens to recognize this potential, they first need to first learn how to embrace the unique way God has created them (as opposed to wishing they were someone else).
Carrie: Amen & amen. SO important for teen girls to realize & embrace this as early as possible!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Tessa: My agent is currently shopping my latest YA fiction manuscript around to publishers, so hopefully I will have bookish news soon! (God-willing, of course.) As of lately I have been working on writing the screenplay for my first YA novel, Purple Moon. Screenwriting is a completely different craft than novel writing, but it has been exciting to learn how to translate this story onto the screen! Once I finish the screenplay, I will then begin to brainstorm the third book in the Purple Moon Series, as well as a new non-fiction project. Readers can sign up for my newsletter to receive monthly(ish) updates!
Carrie: how fun!
