I am delighted to welcome Jackie Layton to the blog today to chat about her new cozy mystery, Bag of Bones, which releases tomorrow!
Jackie Layton has always lived in the southeast United States. Kentucky, Georgia, and now South Carolina. She loves living in the low country and often can’t believe how blessed she is. Despite cracked ribs and a trip to the emergency room after getting a hook in her foot while body surfacing, she’s always had fun with her kids playing in the waves. When she’s not writing, Jackie enjoys long walks, bike rides, golf cart rides, reading on the beach, and collecting shells. Jackie Layton is the author of Low Country Dog Walker Mystery series. Bite the Dust and Dog-Gone Dead are the first two books. Bag of Bones comes out on October 30. Jackie always enjoys hearing from readers.

Other Books in the Series
Hi dear Jackie! Welcome to the blog!
Jackie: Summer because I can throw on shorts and a T-shirt and head outside.
Carrie: but it’s so hot haha
Jackie: Dogs because I’m allergic to cats.
Carrie: aww i’m sorry about the allergy but dogs are better anyway 😉
Jackie: Music makes me feel good, or sad, or happy, or energetic or worshipful. Music has such a huge effect on my moods. A song can come on the radio, and I may not be able to tell you the name of the song or the artist, but I can often sing the words.
Carrie: yes! me too.
Jackie: Ocean because it’s where I feel closest to God.
Carrie: i love that!
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Jackie: Being sensitive (some might say oversensitive) to other people’s moods.
Carrie: that can be a good (and difficult) trait to have!
Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?
Jackie: I look for local authors first. I always enjoy finding new authors.
Carrie: it’s so fun to do that, isn’t it?
Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?
Jackie: We had a choice of a screened in porch or making the space an office. My husband told the builder, it needed to be an office. I have enough room for my bookshelves, a desk, a file cabinet, and a table for my vision board. I have windows in my office which gives me great light, and I can look outside when I get stuck on where my story needs to go.
Carrie: that sounds lovely!
Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote Bag of Bones?
Jackie: The Fighter by Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood was a song I listened to often. It’s about a woman who has been hurt by a man, and the singer sees what a precious heart the woman has and promises not to hurt her. I can see Marc Williams singing this song to Andi Grace Scott.
Carrie: I love that song & I love Marc in this series!
Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing Bag of Bones, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?
Jackie: My characters often lead me in different directions, and I’m open to following their lead.
Carrie: keeps it fun for you as well as the readers!
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Bag of Bones?
Jackie: Andi Grace Scott is all about justice, and one of her favorite verses is Isaiah 1:17. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the cause of the widow. In Bag of Bones, an older woman is murdered. Andi Grace wants to find justice for the woman and begins investigating.
Carrie: Love that verse!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Jackie:I have a contract for three more books in A Low Country Dog Walker Mystery series. I’ve started plotting the fourth book, Bark and Seek, and I plan to start writing in November.
Carrie: yay!!!! Can’t wait 🙂
