Hi Lauren! Welcome to the blog!
Lauren: Summer! I love school vacation, going to the beach, barbecues, and watching baseball games.
Carrie: but winter is so cozy! lol
Lauren: I enjoy both, but if I had to choose just one, it would be coffee (I’m answering this as I finish a cup of tea – ha!).
Lauren: Depends what I’m doing. Working out – music. Cleaning – audiobook.
Carrie: ooo i like that strategy!
Lauren: I’m going to give a non-committal answer here and go with soup and ½ a sandwich. 🙂 I love both.
Carrie: lol i’ll allow it 😉
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Lauren: Transporting myself to different places instantaneously, especially now that travel is more difficult. Wouldn’t it be nice to go on vacation without the long drive or flight? Paris for breakfast, Italy for lunch, a Texas barbecue dinner, then home to sleep in your own bed.
Carrie: yes! that would be so nice!
Q: Who is your favorite book character from childhood?
Lauren: Anne Shirley, of course. I even named my daughter Blythe!
Carrie: awww i love that! how sweet ♥
Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?
Lauren: The beauty of writing from a laptop is I can go wherever the mood strikes. I do have a desk upstairs, but often find myself at the kitchen table, the dining room table, outside on the patio, or in a coffee shop. My ideal writing place doesn’t exactly exist yet. It’s a quiet, sea-side cottage/farmhouse with no laundry or dirty dishes. I think I could settle in quite nicely there.
Carrie: oh yes, me too!
Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing The Plans We Made, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?
Lauren: I’m a big picture person, so I definitely need a clear view of the overall story. Also, since one character’s journey was health related, we had to follow a pretty close timeline when it came to his treatment plan. But there were definitely characters who drove the story at times. I planned for one character to be prickly, but just couldn’t take her there. Another character’s anger issues were really resonating as I wrote, so I kept him there for longer than I’d intended. The more you get to know your characters, the more you end up adjusting plot points to cater to their personality types, preferences, choices, and natural reactions.
Carrie: that’s so fascinating!
Q: What is something God taught you while you wrote The Plans We Made?
Lauren: Keep a light grip on your plans. There’s nothing wrong with goals, to-do lists, or well-planned endeavors. In fact, those are all great. But life doesn’t always go the way we want, so best to keep a tight hold on Him above all else.
Carrie: Amen & amen!!
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Lauren: I am pursuing a Master’s degree in Biblical Exposition, and writing a devotional. I hope to be done with both at the end of next year.
Katie is hard at work on a series set in imperial Russia, starting in the time of Catherine the Great.
Carrie: wow! congratulations and best wishes to you both ♥
