Top Ten Tuesday: My Non-Bookish Hobbies

Posted November 3, 2020 by meezcarrie in Christian, Top Ten Tuesday / 37 Comments

Happy Tuesday! When I read today’s theme for Top Ten Tuesday – Non-Bookish Hobbies (What do you do that does not involve books or reading?) – my first thought was “I don’t understand the question.” I mean, honestly? Books & reading are pretty much my life, but I’ve managed to drum up a few non-bookish hobbies to share with you today. Sorta. Well, you’ll see…

I’ve enjoyed cross stitching since I was a little girl. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to knit and sew … I can manage crochet in a pinch… but cross stitching is really the only handcraft I have quasi-mastered. A few of the patterns I’m looking forward to trying sometime soon are I Cannot Live Without Books, Bookshelf, Anne of Green Gables… oh. oops. I guess this is a bookish hobby after all.

One of my very favorite things to do is hang out with my nieces and nephews. Especially when the littles want me to read a book to them … or when the not-so-littles talk about books they’ve read recently & loved. Or… oh wait. Oops. That’s kinda bookish too, isn’t it?

Ok, so I guess this is not really a hobby, more like a lifeline, but i’m reaching here, y’all. And yes, it’s based on THE Book of books, but I wouldn’t call it bookish per se. I love reading the Bible and then digging deeper into its truth with the help of Bible study books by Beth Moore, Kristy Cambron, Priscilla Shirer…. well, darn. I brought books into it again, didn’t i?

I ADORE SCENTED CANDLES!! I packed two boxes of scented candles when we were going through our first round of packing our house to get ready to sell. I especially love candles when they’re based off my favorite settings or characters or … books. Dang it. Still bookish.

A little known fact about me is that I love collecting versions of the Cinderella story. From Disney’s versions to the Faerie Tale Theater version to Ever After, I love watching different takes on the familiar tale. But I mainly collect different versions of the story in book … shoot. I knew I was stretching this one a bit to be considered ‘non-bookish’ but it kinda fell apart there, didn’t it? Clearly a bookish hobby.

I’m a history nut, and I love learning about all the pieces that make up the ancestry that built who I am today. Some of my fave discoveries? William Shakespeare is my paternal first cousin, 14 times removed. And another relative on my dad’s side was Abraham Lincoln’s neighbor and he would walk over to their cabin frequently to borrow her books. Argh. There I went again. BOOKS ARE EVERYWHERE! How can anyone expect me to come up with 10 non-bookish hobbies? I can’t even come up with one, apparently.

Another fave television pastime is watching cozy mysteries like Murder She Wrote, Crossword Puzzle Mysteries, Chronicle Mysteries, Aurora Teagarden Mysteries, etc. Oh wait. That last one is based on a book series. See? This is impossible lol.

I also have accumulated quite a few fun mugs – like my ‘hey y’all’ mug or the Winnie the Pooh mug I bought on our honeymoon at Disney World. Or the new Hogwarts cauldron mug I got from one of my book sisters for my birthday. Or my Reading Is My SuperPower mug that an author friend sent me. Or the “No such thing as too many books”…. oops. Did it again.

Blogging is a hobby that takes a LOT of work but is so fun that I don’t really mind. I love highlighting authors and … oh…. and books. And bookish things. Yeah, this one isn’t going to work either as a non-bookish hobby. Hmmm…

MUSIC!! Music is definitely non-bookish. I love creating various Spotify playlists to match different themes in my life, and I listen to them almost daily while I’m blogging… about books.

Ok, that’s it. I surrender!! I have no completely non-bookish hobbies… and I can’t say that I’m terribly disappointed. After all, books are the ‘key to the whole world’ (so says Jane Hamilton), their own uniquely portable magic according to Stephen King. So yeah, I’m all about the books and perfectly happy about it 🙂

What about you? What are some of your non-bookish hobbies? What do you do that doesn’t involve books or reading?

Okay, you made me giggle with this one. And you get an A+. There’s nothing wrong with book-related non-book hobbies, is there?

    No, I didn’t think so.

BTW, I love cross stitch. Love Mirabilia and all their gorgeous beaded angels and mermaids. Happy sigh.

Plus I quilt (mostly applique). Trying to learn crochet (again). And I want to learn to knit. I need more time.

And then there’s hockey. Wait, how did that get in there with all the old lady stuff?

    Heh heh.

You totally cracked me up. I loved reading this post! You, sweet friend, are such an awesomely fun and interesting person.

  4. Online college teaching, which is pretty similar, but also jewelry-making, most recently using porcupine kills gathered by my kind son who gently swatted a road kill using my extra shirt from a Minnesota road kill on the edge of a highway.

  5. I tried to get for “relaxation,” and you should have seen my first chain. It kept getting tighter, and Tighter, and TIGHTER! Lol!! Playing music is my non-bookish activity – I don’t call it a hobby, because it’s just who I am!! 🥰

  6. Yeah, I don’t think I have any completely non-bookish hobbies either… my favorite part of camping is uninterrupted reading time, road trips = audiobooks… I haven’t quilted much since I started blogging and the last thing I sewed was a book sleeve… The first and last crocheted blanket I started is still unfinished (maybe I’ll attempt that while reading my Kindle this winter)… I do like baking cookies but not as much as I like eating them while reading a book… I enjoy helping my hubby with DIY projects but bookshelves are my favorite! Looks like we have another reason to be book sisters 😉

  7. Baking! I’m most known for cinnamon rolls, but also do a lot of baking for grandkiddos with severe wheat, nut & dairy allergies. I3ts tricky, but I sort of love the challenge. The biggest hits are my GF Pumpkin choc chip muffins. 🙂 I also get a wee bit obsessive over cake and cookie decorating…When I’m not on a writing deadline.

I also love muscle cars and anything that goes fast. 😉 Not sure if it counts as a hobby or just randomness. 😉

  8. Haha! I understand all that! I loved my horse and horsebackriding ( don’t have her anymore 🙁 ) but wanted a horse after reading all the Black Stallion books! 🙂 So, I understand! Oh, and I love the Clue game…but then that’s because I love myseries… 🙂

This was really cute Carrie! How could you NOT be connected to books? They are your life!
My hobbies are cross stitch too, although I haven’t tried in a year or so. I need new glasses! I craft/sew other things like Christmas ornaments. I have 12+ shoeboxes fill of beads. I make jewelry out of them when I get the urge to match a new outfit.( does shopping count? )
Happy packing! I pray you will find a reliable mover.

  10. Well…I do throw mud on a wheel and see what happens with it…and I make jewelry from that mud–well, porcelain mud. lol. Everything else revolves around books…oh wait…I had a character who was a potter…
