I’m delighted today to welcome Anneka R. Walker to the blog to chat about her new Regency romance Refining the Debutante! (look for my review on Saturday)
REFINING THE DEBUTANTE
GENRE: Historical/Regency Romance (Clean & Wholesome)
PUBLISHER: Covenant Communications
RELEASE DATE: March 8, 2021
Miss Miranda Bartley is in love with the Honorable Ethan Roderick, their engagement all but official. But as she basks in the success of her London Season, her joy is cut short when Ethan ends their courtship, claiming she is too insensitive. In the wake of her heartbreak, Miranda is dealt yet another blow, one that changes everything. In a harsh twist of fate, she quickly falls from Society darling to servant in her uncle’s home.
Believing he will never see Miranda again, Ethan is shocked when he encounters her by accident. Even more surprising is her dramatic change; she is no longer the self-centered young woman he left behind. Her eyes are now open to the plight of poverty surrounding her, and Miranda has become every bit the lady Ethan once imagined her to be. As he helps the woman he once loved, their tattered relationship returns to familiarity. But Ethan is determined to protect his heart and begins a courtship with his neighbor, who is predictable and safe—everything Miranda is not. Forced to perform a delicate dance, Miranda and Ethan must choose—follow the rules of Society or the longing of their hearts.
Hi Anneka! Welcome to the blog!
Anneka: Summer! I am always cold so I love me some sunshine. And I was born on the summer solstice so summer and me are just meant to be.
Carrie: haha apparently so!
Anneka: Hallmark! Although, lately Kdramas are winning out over Hallmark. Give me all the sweet romance and HEA’s!
Carrie: yes please! (though i haven’t made it to Kdramas yet)
Anneka: I am a mountain girl. Not to be mistaken for a mountain goat (I’m no rock climber). There’s something about mountains and trees that breathes life into me and fills me with peace.
Carrie: yes! me too!
Anneka: Both! I have a kindle full of books that’s perfect for a grab and go, but I also have a thing for the smell of printed paper and the feel of a book in my hands. Basically, give me a good book in any form and I will love it!
Carrie: exactly! Except for the summer thing, we are basically the same person (bring me all the snow lol)
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Anneka: Praying is my superpower. It’s what keeps me going! When someone needs something, I’m not the best gift giver and generally don’t know what to say or do, but I’m really good at praying for people.
Carrie: i love that – prayer for others is so important ♥
Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?
Anneka: The kid section! I fall in love with books all over again when I walk by those brightly colored books. It’s so magical for me. Nowhere else can you can see a such a vast spectrum of author talent, spanning fact to the fantastical, like you can between the children’s and middle grade section. I’m the crazy lady who is snapping pictures of books I want to get later or look up at my library.
Carrie: hahaha. There IS something so fun & magical about the kiddy lit section of a store or library.
Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever Googled while researching a book?
Anneka: Goat tricks. I scoured almost every Youtube video on the topic until I found a winner. I then wrote a Christmas novella where a man put a goat in a sitting position, and it relaxed so completely it looked like it was dead. The goat is what brought my main characters together! Thank you, Youtube, for the inspiration! Of course, I had to go to my in-law’s farm and try the trick for myself—you know, to test the research—which was how I came to be a goat wrestler. Trust me when I say, it’s not as easy as it looked in the video!
Carrie: LOL LOL that’s hilarious
Q: What surprised you about your book or your characters as you wrote Refining the Debutante?
Anneka: I hadn’t planned to write a story where nearly the entire main cast of characters experienced a change of heart. It was just supposed to be that way for my main character! When I went and reread my first draft, I was amazed to see these arcs showing up everywhere as my characters decided to forgive, or forget, or to help someone, or be a little better. The reality is, our lives often pattern fictional characters in one aspect or another, and so that progression with the characters was natural and extremely important. It was an aha moment, showing me this theme of refinement happens most often in the little decisions we make daily, transforming us into stronger, more compassionate individuals.
Carrie: so poignant – and so true. love it
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Refining the Debutante?
Anneka: I hope my themes of love and redemption resonate with my readers. God is aware of us no matter where we are at, or how broken we feel. Our efforts matter, because we need each other to get through hard times.
Carrie: amen ♥
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Anneka: I have a lot of fun projects coming! In September, my first Christian Fiction contemporary romance is coming out with Covenant Communications. I’m also part of a Christmas anthology with two other incredible authors. Next year, I hope you’ll see a couple of novellas, a new novel in a brand new Regency series, and *fingers crossed* a Regency fairy-tale retell (similar to The Masked Baron which came out last year). Thank you for the interview and for letting me share my story with you!
Carrie: my absolute pleasure! 🙂
