When I read The Charm Offensive, book 1 in Webb’s City By the Bay Stories, I said, “…I hope The Charm Offensive’s universe becomes a series – there are other stories to be discovered with the supporting characters.” Well it did become a series & those supporting characters did get their stories – and finally Drew gets his happily ever after too! I don’t know if this is the last book in the series or if the author will revisit it later, but she is starting a new series in August so I was especially glad to catch up with some of my fave characters from this series – like Brad & Sophie … and of course Ella! (I loved loved loved that we got to hang out a lot with Ella in Three Makes a Family!)
Before I go further, can we talk about how adorable that cover is!!! Hazel adds all manner of cuteness & sweetness to this story, and she totally deserved to be the cover feature. The way she instantly connects to & trusts Drew and especially Ella was heartwarming all on its own. Then throw in Drew & Molly’s backstories and the way the community continues to come together in support of friends & family – Three Makes a Family definitely lives up to its heartwarming category.
But lest you think it’s all sweetness and light, there’s some courtroom drama going on, not to mention the sparks between Drew & Molly. I loved that they had been best friends in law school – and had crushes on each other – and I loved that, though it had been years since they’d been in touch, they were able to practically pick up right where they’d left off. An easy chemistry between them adds to the swooniness factor of their second chance/friends falling in love romance, and I enjoyed watching it unfold on the pages.
Bottom Line: Take one adorable infant, a bunch of sweet puppies, a community that stands up for its own, a bit of courtroom drama, and a second chance at love with your law school best friend … and you’ve got a book that will keep you smiling from beginning to end. Drew, Molly, and even little Hazel are a formidable team with instant heart connection – between their characters, yes, but also between them and the reader. In fact, reading Three Makes a Family is a wonderful way to spend a weekend – and it will lift your heart in the process.
