With her husband’s ultimate betrayal, and the finalization of her divorce, Jessica Palmer’s dreams for her life go up in flames, leaving her devastated and lost. Now, she’s leaving Chicago and moving back into her parents’ house in an effort to rebuild her life. Longtime neighbor and friend, Liam Engstrom, is the only reason she hasn’t completely fallen apart, but the closer they get, the more she realizes the depth of his feelings.

Liam has loved Jessica since they were teens, but she never noticed him as more than a friend. Now that she’s single, he’s determined to show her how much he cares and that not all men are like her ex-husband–if she’ll let him.

Jessica is reluctant to trust again after what her husband did to her, and Liam refuses to be the rebound guy, but their attraction is hard to deny. So, together, with a little help from God, they decide to give love a chance. But between Liam’s recent inheritance and an unwanted public billionaire status that has people lining up with their hands out, and Jessica’s ex-husband monitoring her every move, their relationship is off to a rocky start. And when tragedy strikes, Liam pushes everyone away—including Jessica. Can they both learn to forgive and grow, or are they doomed to be alone?

Hi Carol! Welcome back to the blog!

Carol: Dogs. I have both, but my Lab is my baby.

Carrie: dogs are such great companions, aren’t they?

Carol: Coffee. I can’t get my day started without it.

Carrie: I’m that way about my Diet Coke lol

Carol: Music. I have different playlists for every mood.

Carrie: me too! 🙂

Carol: ebook. The light on the screen makes the print easier to see than the paper version.

Carrie: i agree – it’s great for lessening eye strain when you read a lot like i do

Q: Who is your favorite book character from childhood?

Carol: Laura Ingalls Wilder. I loved reading the Little House books. I’ve also read them several times as an adult. I appreciate the history in them more now than I did when I was a kid.

Carrie: i love Laura! I still have my original yellow box set 🙂

Q: Do you have any strange writing habits/quirks? Any snacks/beverages that are a must when you sit down to write?

Carol: I like to get up at 3:00 a.m. when the house is quiet and write. I mix hazelnut and fudge-flavored coffee and drink a cup or two every morning. I usually have a piece of peanut butter toast with it unless there are donuts. Then donuts win.

Carrie: Donuts should always win haha!

Q: Which character in The Reluctant Billionaire was the most difficult to write?

Carol: Liam had a lot of layers that I had to dig through to find his true character. He’s loyal and loves deeply, but in some ways he’s still the shy boy that Jessica defended from a bully when they were in high school.

Carrie: layered heroes are the best!

Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing The Reluctant Billionaire, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?

Carol: I just sat down and wrote it without any direction, letting the characters and dialogue tell the story. During the editing process I had to write out a timeline and change some of the scenes around.

Carrie: I think I would have that approach as an author too, were I ever to write a book lol

Q: Is anything in this book based on real life experiences?

Carol: Jessica’s sister Julie likes going on mission trips to Mexico. I also went on several trips to Mexico and even spent six months there immersed in the culture. Like Julie, I considered becoming a missionary.

Carrie: oh wow! what a great opportunity you had to be immersed in the culture!

Q: What is something God taught you while you wrote The Reluctant Billionaire?

Carol: My characters have both experienced heartache, but God brought hope and love into their lives. God gave them beauty for ashes. He has done the same for me. I lost my husband in a work accident after 20 years of marriage. God has healed my broken heart and blessed me by making my dream of becoming a published author come true. The Reluctant Billionaire is the beauty that God brought out of the ashes of my heartache and grief.

Carrie: I’m so sorry for your loss. ♥ God is so faithful, isn’t He? To give us beauty for ashes…

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Carol: I have a sequel to my Christmas novella coming out next holiday season, Serena’s New Year’s Wish. I always have another book developing, so I’m sure you’ll see more from me in the future.
