ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: Bent Tree Bride
Author: Denise Weimer
Publisher: Smitten Historical Romance
Release Date: April 13, 2021
Genre: Christian historical romance
“Romance. Intrigue. Honor. All that and more. I heartily recommend it.” —Michelle Griep, Christy Award-winning author
Susanna Moore can’t get him out of her mind—the learned lieutenant who delivered the commission from Andrew Jackson making her father colonel of the Cherokee Regiment. But the next time she sees Lieutenant Sam Hicks, he’s leading a string of prisoners into a frontier fort, and he’s wearing the garb of a Cherokee scout rather than the suit of a white gentleman.
As both Susanna’s father and Sam’s commanding officer, Colonel Moore couldn’t have made his directive to stay away from his daughter clearer to Sam. He wants a better match for Susanna—like the stuffy doctor who escorted her to Creek Territory. Then a suspected spy forces Moore to rely on Sam for military intelligence and Susanna’s protection, making it impossible for either to guard their heart.

Hi Denise! Welcome back to the blog!
Denise: Dogs—due to their unconditional love and the fact that we have the sweetest cockapoo ever, Lucy. Cats can be amusing but standoffish … although, I did have a very special, affectionate cat growing up.
Carrie: People keep telling me that cats can be affectionate but i have yet to meet one lol
Denise: I really want to say both here because I drink a cup of coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon. If I had to let either go, I could find a way to be content with the other. 🙂
Carrie: ‘Both’ is a totally acceptable answer 🙂
Denise: Mountains – I always answer the unpopular way with this question. I’ve always felt lighter and closer to God, going up in elevation. I love the Appalachian Mountains scenery, especially in the fall. Also, my girls were such water babies that for years, we vacationed on the beach. Now I want to leave tracked-in sand and sweat behind for a destination of my choosing.
Carrie: That’s not an unpopular answer with me 🙂 The mountains are my happy place!
Denise: Board game. I’m not the greatest at card games because I’m not a numbers person. Neither do I like games that rely solely on luck.
Carrie: I prefer board games too, though there are a couple of card games I enjoy.
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Denise: I’m a very intuitive person, but people so often present themselves differently than they really are. I want to believe everyone is operating out of good intentions and a similar way of thinking, which isn’t always true. It often takes time and difficult circumstances to show someone’s deepest layers. I’d like to know in advance which people to be more careful around—like detecting a secret warning label. LOL
Carrie: oh that would be fabulous! Would definitely come in handy, especially in today’s world lol
Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?
Denise: Christian fiction
Carrie: me too! 🙂
Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever Googled while researching a book?
Denise: It would be a toss-up between “how to escape video surveillance” for my techno-suspense romance, Traces, or “knife fighting and tomahawk throwing” for Bent Tree Bride.
Carrie: haha the combination of those two searches would be intriguing to someone who didn’t know those were for two different books
Q: What surprised you about your book or your characters as you wrote Bent Tree Bride?
Denise: I wrote Bent Tree Bride the fastest I’ve ever written any book … a total of six weeks, even though I did not skimp on research. I believe this happened for two reasons. 1/ It’s my favorite genre, frontier fiction. 2/ I wrote it just after the heaviest part of my editing training and delving into my new job as a managing editor. That training and focus gave me a special momentum.
Carrie: that’s a nice side benefit (and congratulations!!)
Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote Bent Tree Bride?
Denise: The soundtrack of Last of the Mohicans tends to inspire all my Colonial- or Federal-era frontier romances. LOL
Carrie: haha!
Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Bent Tree Bride?
Denise: My hope is that readers will finish Bent Tree Bride breathless, hair blown back by the action and romance of the journey they’ve just taken. [Think of those multi-sensory rides at Disney. LOL.] Some books are meant to transport you into a different world. This is one of those.
Theme-wise, I hope readers pick up on how God transforms and works through people of all backgrounds. His redemption shines through human failings.
Carrie: amen ♥
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Denise: This winter, I finished another romance set in the same period as Bent Tree Bride called A Secondhand Betrothal. It takes place on the Georgia frontier and focuses more on the homefront than the battlefront. It’s about a scorned woman who thinks she’s secondhand and the scout-slash-carpenter who models the true meaning of love as he keeps her safe from mysterious attacks on the Indian boundary. My agent is shopping that novel.
I’m currently researching and writing another contemporary romance in the style of Fall Flip and Spring Splash … Winter Wish. Can you tell I enjoy seasonal stories? This one is about a female glassblower who gets a restart in the artsy mountain town of Blue Ridge, Georgia.
Carrie: Georgia has a special place in my reader heart lately, having just moved here. Bring on all the Georgia stories! 🙂

This sounds really good. I must check it out!
Re: cats. You’ll never understand cats until you live with them. Cats ARE standoffish with people they don’t know. Most of them are easily scared by strangers. It’s not until they know you and trust you that they’ll show you their unprotected underbellies. 🙂
achoo! 😉 I believe you – I do! (ooo that rhymed hahaha)
