At the height of the Inquisition, a secret half a millennium old is about to be exposed—a lost letter believed to have been written by Saint Paul but never part of the Christian canon. The letter speaks of men and women—the Gifted—with profound spiritual gifts that will strike fear in the heart of a Church dedicated to maintaining power. Now the letter has surfaced and the Gifted are gathering. But so are their enemies…

A Virtual Tour of Italy

by Lisa T Bergren, author of Begotten

Ahhh…a virtual tour of Italia, about as close as we can come right now with Covid still keeping most of the world out. Diving back into edits of this series made me homesick for a country I’ve come to love. When I was first researching Begotten in 2006, Tim and I headed to Italy for the very first time—and it was our first time as world travelers (together). The kids had gotten big enough to leave behind and we adults needed an adventure. Italy was magical from the first hour onward. We walked our feet off in Roma, (where Begotten begins) marveling at the Coliseum, the Pantheon and picturesque piazzas. We ate gelato and drank red wine and at the end of the day, wondered if we had the strength to get back to the hotel.

After that we moved to Toscana (Tuscany), where we checked into a gorgeous villa for five days and set about touring the beautiful hill towns that each have their own unique flavor, returning each evening to make dinner together and relax.  We spent a whole day in Firenze (Florence) seeing the famous landmarks, statuary and artwork, and eating a crazy-delicious meal surrounded by the locals, who are just as boisterous and merry as you think they would be (when not battling Covid). Because a friend had tipped me off, we spent another day in Siena, and it quickly became my favorite…it still has its medieval bones and is picturesque—with all its red-roofed buildings and white-and-black striped cathedral and thick defense walls. It was Siena and the rolling, green hills beyond it that I placed the beginning of Begotten. Later, it’s where I set my River of Time Series too.

Finally, we drove to Venezia (Venice) for our last three, magical days of the trip. And that is where the Gifted are heading when Begotten closes.

I always tell people not to go to Italy because it gets under your skin and demands you return. Since that first trip so many years ago, I’ve been blessed to visit many other fabulous destinations, but it is Italia that calls me to return again and again. There’s something about the landscape, the people, the history and the food that makes this Nordic-Austrian want to become Italian. Or at least return for frequent visits. 🙂
