Favorite quote from the book
by David Curtis Warren
Every time I read one of the ‘True Lies of Rembrandt Stone’ books, I’m convinced that that one is my favorite, and Sticks and Stone is no different. Several of my favorite scenes in the series are in this book, and it’s got perhaps the most romantic moments.
Every story needs a quiet before the storm. In our story this moment comes right after a literal storm. I can’t give too much away, but I’ll say that Rembrandt gets a chance to reflect on what he has, in the moment. It’s that frame of mind that gives us this quote.
There’s a saying on a picture in my office, back in, well, my real life. It’s a quote from a speaker and it reads, Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be happy. Sometimes you have to find the happy moments between the pain.
Maybe I’m expecting too much from life to give me a happy ending.
Maybe now is enough.
This becomes a defining question throughout the rest of the series. What risks are worth taking in order to strive for happiness? Is it possible to be content after loss? These are suspenseful stories, but the characters are very real to me, and they struggle with the same things that we all do.
Rembrandt stone’s favorite things
by James L. Rubart
Rem channels Julie Andrews and talks about a few of his favorite things:
1. Going online and finding and buying vintage vinyl albums from his favorite classic rock bands.
2. Working out his frustrations by going a few rounds (boxing) down at Quincy’s.
3. Barbecuing (and eating) cheeseburgers where the Swiss and provolone cheese is mixed in with the hamburger beforehand.
4. Connecting with the outdoors and clearing his head by going for morning runs.
5. Driving hot, fast cars.
Sticks and stone playlist
by Susan May Warren
Susie, (the drafter) shares her YouTube Playlist.
So, as I was writing the Rem books, I relied on one main playlist for the THEMES of Rem. I listened to this when I was writing Eve’s scenes, and sometimes scenes where Rem was confronting some of his personal demons. Although this is not a particularly “Christian” book from the outside, I think readers will discover that Rem’s story is one of redemption and that at the core, it’s absolutely transformational. And the songs I listened to leaned me in that direction.
Find that playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJv5-sL3rB2JrzV-YuQTjDpG_pyuLqLiq
That said, all other times, I listened to my Pandora Classic Rock radio station. Which is why you’ll hear classics from Journey, Styx, Kansas, Boston, REO Speedwagon, 38 Special, Eddie Money, and even the occasional Brian Adams!
