Fresh Scars

FRESH SCARS by Donna Mumma
Publisher: Firefly Southern Fiction (Iron Stream Media)
Release Date: June 15, 2021
Genre: Southern Fiction

Time heals all wounds . . . or does it?

Asia Butler and her sister, Ivy Butler Morelli, have not spoken in fifteen years. As children, they endured brutal emotional abuse from their mother, Veronica, and want only to forget the past . . . and each other.

But the past comes calling when they each receive a letter from Veronica s attorney promising much-needed cash if they will fulfill her dying wish and consent to cleaning out their childhood home. Asia and Ivy reluctantly return to their hometown of Emerson, Florida, only to discover the house is a hoarder’s nightmare filled with strange mementos and clues hinting that they were not the only victims of Veronica’s sadistic nature.

Can this new pain be the path to their healing? Will they be able to choose forgiveness over resentment?

Hi Donna! Welcome to the blog!

Donna: Oranges. I’m a Florida girl who grew up in the middle of citrus country. Love them.

Carrie: I bet citrus country smells wonderful!

Donna: Winter. Here in Florida, it’s a nice break from the heat and hurricane season.

Carrie: true!

Donna: Dogs. We have a collie that melts my heart.

Carrie: awww, dogs do have a tendency to do that 🙂

Donna: No preference. I’m just happy when it’s on the roll!

Carrie: hahaha that is the truth

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Donna: Invisibility. I’m an introvert and that would be heavenly to disappear from view at will.

Carrie: yes please! #bliss

Q: Other than the Bible, what are five of your most cherished books?

Donna: The Velveteen Rabbit, Cross Creek by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the series by veterinarian James Herriot, and a copy of Huckleberry Finn, illustrated by Norman Rockwell, that belonged to my dad.

Carrie: aww i love that ♥

Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever Googled while researching a book?

Donna: I googled how long it takes before an alligator bite becomes septic and how long DNA in a blood stain stays fresh on a cotton t-shirt.

Carrie: oh wow! that sounds like it would be an intense story!

Q: What surprised you about your story or your characters as you wrote Fresh Scars?

Donna: My main character is very much like me, but she was difficult for me to write. I had a hard time creating realistic, interesting dialogue for her. Her sister is my direct opposite, very brash, bossy, magnetic, and confrontational. She flowed from my imagination with ease and was far more fun to write. I had to be careful because she isn’t the main character but kept getting the best lines.

Carrie: haha!

Q: Some authors like to hide little things in their stories. Is there anything you have hidden in Fresh Scars?

Donna: I have a few. My dad’s name is in there as well as references to my high school, hometown church, and a house that used to be in the town near where I grew up.

Carrie: that’s special ♥

Q: What is one of your favorite quotes from Fresh Scars & why do you love it?

Donna: A favorite quote is “Sometimes bad garbage refused to leave no matter how many times you screamed goodbye.” We all have those things in our life that trash it up in some way and trying to get rid of them is difficult. This quote summed up the struggle for me, and reminded me that we need God’s help to clean up our lives. We can’t do it on our own.

Carrie: amen!

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Donna: I have a couple of new projects in my writing queue. First is a story about a woman who is the family pariah. Several years after being thrown out of the family, she discovers there may be evidence proving she wasn’t responsible for the event that caused her to be banned. She sets out to find the proof so she can present it to the family at her sister’s funeral and redeem herself. But things don’t go as planned.

The second deals with sibling rivalry, a conniving stepparent, a missing family fortune, and a kidnapping/murder plot.
