Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Pearl’s Promise by Edwina Kiernan, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours! I’m delighted to be chatting with Edwina today about her book!

Pearl's Promise

PEARL’S PROMISE by Edwina Kiernan
Series: Gems of Grace #2
Publisher: Moliant Publishing
Release Date: May 1, 2021
Genre: Christian Historical Romance

A duty-bound heir. A dejected spinster.

An encounter that could ruin both their families’ demands for their futures…

Horrified to see the man she had always dreamed of marrying saying his vows to someone else, Pearl Acton’s devastation only seems to confirm one of her deepest fears – that she’ll remain unseen and alone, never mattering to anyone.

And when her family falls on hard times and seeks to marry her off to a wealthy suitor as soon as possible, her other deepest fear seems inevitable – being trapped in a loveless marriage, just like her parents.

Until an encounter with a quiet and soulful heir, Nicholas Dalton, sparks a fragile hope that perhaps Pearl might save her family’s fortune and marry for love.

But when circumstances on both sides of their families take drastic turns, the promise of happiness seems irrevocably shattered.

As Pearl and Nicholas each strive to uphold their family duties, they soon discover that things aren’t quite what they seem. But is it too late to escape their crushing obligations and forge a new path – together?

Hi Edwina! Welcome to the blog!

Edwina: Cats. I love how quiet and content they are, and how they often look so deep in thought.

Carrie: While I prefer dogs, after dogsitting my brother’s dogs this weekend, quiet and content does sound appealing lol.

Edwina: Tea. I absolutely love tea and drink multiple cups per day (including different blends, herbals and varieties). Love it, love it, love it!

Carrie: I’ve always wanted to love tea (or coffee, for that matter) because it sounds so cozy.

Edwina: Audiobooks. Words are like music to me, especially when they’re arranged in a beautiful pattern that conveys a deep truth. Audiobooks are – literally – music to my ears!

Carrie: oh that’s so beautifully said!

Edwina: Board game. I love all sorts of games, but I really love the togetherness element of board games – you’re all there, gathered around it and interacting with each other and having great fun – together.

Carrie: yes! i agree!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Edwina: Optimism. I’ve endured a lot of tough situations and circumstances in life, but my faith in God is my anchor that helps me focus on the bigger picture and know how blessed I truly am. To me, the glass is half-full, for sure. Maybe even more than half. Things could always be worse.

Carrie: i love that ♥

Q: Other than the Bible, what are five of your most cherished books?

Edwina: the Clothbound Classics edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte that my husband and son gave to me; the copy of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers that my dad gave me at my graduation; the copy of Romeo & Juliet by William Shakepeare that my dad gave me (with his notes from studying it at school inside); the hardback, illustrated edition of The Horse and His Boy by C. S. Lewis that my sister gave to me; the book of Anne Bronte’s poems that my husband gave to me on one of our wedding anniversaries

Carrie: those are so special! We turned my china hutch into a bookcase for those kind of cherished books in our house too 🙂

Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?

Edwina: We have a spare room in our house that we turned into a home office. It has a white desk attached to white cubed shelves, a daybed, and a carpeted, doorless, platformed cupboard (the floor of which is actually at seat-height) that I use as a prayer nook. Our little office is my favourite place to write — either typing into my computer at my desk, or reclining on the daybed while I write using dictation (which I have to do on days where I have high-pain and low-energy, due to chronic illness). I plan to share more pics of it soon on Instagram once it’s a little more presentable (the decor is still a work in progress)!

Carrie: sending gentle hugs (I know how draining high-pain & low energy & chronic illness can be ♥). That sounds like a delightful place to write!

Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing Pearl’s Promise, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?

Edwina: For each book, I always start with the main idea and message that I want the story to convey, then I craft the characters, then I plot out the main events of the novel, outlining each chapter as I go. Often, I revise elements of the plot as I write, but I love to have a solid list of key scenes and ‘big picture’ events to work with.

Carrie: that sounds like a good strategy!

Q: Some authors like to hide little things in their stories. Is there anything you have hidden in Pearl’s Promise?

Edwina: I always like to hide little hints in my chapter titles – little clues about what’s coming. That was always one of my favourite things as a child and teen when I was reading a book – looking at the chapter titles and trying to surmise what would happen next. I’ve noticed a lot of novels these days don’t have chapter titles, but I love them too much to leave them out! Also, with some of my characters, I’ve named them in tribute to a favourite character or writer. For example, in Ruby’s Redemption, a Mr. Bertram makes an appearance as a clergyman – that’s a little nod to Jane Austen’s Edmund Bertram from Mansfield Park. And in Pearl’s Promise, Pearl’s surname is Acton, which is a little tribute to the pen name that my favourite writer – Anne Bronte – used for publishing her novels (Acton Bell).

Carrie: how fun!

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Pearl’s Promise?

Edwina: That He is close to the broken-hearted. That He doesn’t always answer our prayers the way we hope or expect. And that He is the most loving Father that anyone can ever have. Pearl and Nicholas both have less than ideal relationships with their parents in Pearl’s Promise, but they both learn an important truth — God will never fail you, forget you or forsake you. You can trust Him, no matter what.

Carrie: amen ♥

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Edwina: I am currently writing Beryl’s Blessing, the 3rd book in the Gems of Grace series. A not-so-typical heroine meets a not-so-typical hero and they face some pretty tough themes on their journey toward their happily ever after… Guilt, death, disability and forgiveness all play a part in their story.

Lord-willing, Beryl’s Blessing is set to release on November 1st, 2021. The eBook is available on Amazon to pre-order now.

I appreciate that the author titles her chapters as well as the message that she wants the readers to get from Pearl’s Promise.

  2. Perrianne Askew

I like how she has a plan for what she wants you to take away from her novels. Plus, she’s a Christian author which is a positive for me. I’ve never read her work, so the gorgeous cover and synopsis is definitely drawing me in. All good reasons!
