“You know, we’re both well educated people. Conversation shouldn’t be this difficult.”
Everything Tina Radcliffe writes is enjoyable (though, to my everlasting shame, I believe this is the first of her books that I’ve reviewed), and The Cowgirl’s Sacrifice is no exception. Witty and heartfelt, this story tugs at a range of emotions and leaves you smiling on the inside – and the outside!
Poor Kate. I alternately wanted to hug her and shake her for keeping the seriousness of her injuries from the people who care about her the most – her brothers Rainbolt & her ex-boyfriend Jess McNally. She is fiercely independent and comes across as a little prickly at first, but she has a tender heart on the inside, makes prayer a priority, and wants to help those who can’t help themselves. That’s how she’s injured, as a matter of fact, and it may cause her more time in the hospital before all is said and done. (You’ll just have to read the book to find out why – my spoiler-free lips are sealed!) I grinned at her complete ineptness in the kitchen – until Jess & his adorable niece Olive give her a foolproof solution – and then I chuckled more than once at her amazement over her newfound cooking skills. I also loved how Radcliffe uses this plot device to allow Kate to meet a need in sweet Olive’s heart.
Jess isn’t quite as prickly as Kate, though he certainly has his cactus-y moments in The Cowgirl’s Sacrifice, but his heart is just as tender. (I’m sure he wouldn’t want me admitting that to the world, so that stays between us, ok?) Both he and Kate have some baggage from their respective fathers, and, while Kate’s baggage kept her away from Rebel, it’s Jess’s baggage that brings him home. I gotta say, this cowboy had me grinning & swooning – and while he’s definitely the more serious of the two, I loved how he could hold his own with Kate’s wit as well as with the hoot-of-a-character Willard. (“Keep in mind I’m a couple of eggs short of a dozen right now. And, what’s left is scrambled.”)
Bottom Line: The Cowgirl’s Sacrifice is a sweet story of forgiveness, healing (in various forms) love, and restoration. The Rainbolt family is all over the small town of Rebel, and readers will enjoy getting reacquainted with their faves from the previous books in this series. (No worries if you’ve not read the others yet; this one works well as a standalone if need be.) Kate & Jess are the types of characters that have you rooting for their happily ever after, and you’ll fall in love with the supporting players in their story too. The proverbial ‘they’ may say that you can’t go home again, but Kate and Jess are proving them wrong in this delightful romance from master author Tina Radcliffe. (If it helps, I’m willing to beg for Nicole & Finn’s story too!)
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)
