ROSE AMONG THORNES
Author: Terrie Todd
Publisher: Iron Stream Media (Heritage Beacon)
Release Date: August 31, 2021
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction
Forgiveness is the deadliest force on earth.
War might be raging overseas, but Rose Onishi is on track to fulfill her lifelong goal of becoming a concert pianist. When forced by her government to leave her beloved home in Vancouver and move to the Canadian prairie to work on the Thornes’ sugar beet farm, her dream fades to match the black dirt staining her callused hands. Though the Thorne family is kind, life is unbearably lonely. In hopes that it might win her the chance to play their piano, Rose agrees to write letters to their soldier son.
When Rusty Thorne joins the Canadian Army, he never imagines becoming a Japanese prisoner of war. Inside the camp, the faith his parents instilled is tested like never before. Though he begs God to help him not hate his brutal captors, Rusty can no longer even hear the Japanese language without revulsion. Only his rare letters from home sustain him—especially the brilliant notes from his mother’s charming helper, which the girl signs simply as “Rose.”
Will Rusty survive the war only to encounter the Japanese on his own doorstep? Can Rose overcome betrayal and open her heart? Or will the truth destroy the fragile bond their letters created?

Hi! Welcome to the blog!
Terrie: Summer. (I live in Canada—need I say more?)
Carrie: I wish we could just flip North America so Georgia (where I live) gets all the snow I miss and y’all in Canada can have a break from winter lol
Terrie: Cats. (Dogs are OK, but they don’t purr.)
Carrie: Our dog totally purred…. but I’m pretty sure she thought she was a cat. Even though she hated cats. She was quirky lol
Terrie: Toilet paper goes OVER (the way God intended it.)
Terrie: Print. (I spend too much time in front of a screen as it is.)
Carrie: I do love print books – but ebooks are easier for my eye strain because i can enlarge the font super big lol
Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?
Terrie: I’ve always thought it would be marvelous to be able to hear ONLY the truth, no matter what’s being said or thought. To be deaf to lies. Think what that would do for our self-esteem, for our compassion for others, for our ability to parent and to promote justice. This is something I actually pray for.
Carrie: oh man, the world needs that right now!
Q: Who is your favorite book character from childhood?
Terrie: In second grade, our teacher read to us from Fingerling: Just a Little Man (translated from the original Dutch, “Pinkeltje”) by Dick Laan. The way this little guy, the size of your pinky finger, made his home out of tiny items in nature fascinated me. I loved it so much I took the book home from school and conveniently forgot to return it.
Carrie: LOL i love that
Q: If I asked your characters to describe YOU as an author, what would they say?
Terrie: My characters would probably say, “How could you DO THAT to me?!?!” (I had a reader message me recently when she was halfway through Rose Among Thornes, asking that question about one of the characters. “I’m wailing!” she said.)
Carrie: awww I’ve said that to a few authors before too – I feel that reader’s pain lol
Q: Which character in Rose Among Thornes was the most difficult to write?
Terrie: Rusty Thorne was probably the most difficult because, not only did he live in a different era than I, but he’s male, he was a soldier, and he suffered things I can only imagine. I tried to relate to him on a spiritual level, as someone who deeply desires to follow and please God but struggles with doubt, disappointment, and betrayal.
Carrie: Those are struggles I think most of us can relate to, especially in this current world!
Q: Some authors like to hide little things in their stories. Is there anything you have hidden in your book?
Terrie: Yes, I do hide things! Read my books and see if you can spot them. 😉
Carrie: hahaha fair enough
Q: What is something God taught you while you wrote Rose Among Thornes?
Terrie: Although this story was on my heart for years, I fought writing it because I didn’t believe it was mine to tell. God showed me in so many big and little crazy ways that it was indeed mine to tell. You can read that whole story on my blog here.
Carrie: He is so kind and patient with us, isn’t He? ♥
Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.
Terrie: My next novel, The Last Piece, releases November 16, 2021. It’s about an antique jigsaw puzzle that passes through five different families, affecting each one but refusing to be solved until a prophecy is fulfilled.
Carrie: well, I’m completely intrigued!!
