Oh goodness, y’all. I have fallen in love with another town! Cari Lynn Webb kicks off her new Three Springs, Texas series with The Texas SEAL’s Surprise, and I’m not sure it even took me two whole chapters before I already couldn’t wait for more of this town & these characters. There’s also an overarching story thread involving a treasure and a missing clue that I suspect will be continued throughout the rest of the series, which basically means I’ll be stalking the internet for word of each new book lol.

Wes seems at first like the typical closed-off cowboy with no patience for a flighty young woman from the city. Once we get to know him, however, we see all the layers beneath the surface – the former SEAL, the grieving son, the angry brother, the loyal friend. He’s a man who has tried his best (and failed) to avoid roots as he puts his life on hold to chase what he thinks will make him happy … at least until he meets Abby who unsettles his heart and steals his focus. Abby, a single & pregnant young woman who has yearned for roots her whole life and, after a series of rejections, is desperate to belong. I loved the juxtaposition of these two characters and their pursuits – seemingly at odds, yet the way they complement each other is one of the beauties of life and relationship. Their romance is sweet & swoony and while I maybe wished we had experienced Abby’s pregnancy through her eyes – and Wes’s – a bit more I can also see why the author didn’t want that to be the main focus. I’m also hopeful we’ll get to spend more time with these two as the series continues.

As with any good series start, an important part of The Texas SEAL’s Surprise is establishing the town of Three Springs and the other characters who will play key & supporting roles in later books. I fell head over heels for Boone and Sam – two mischievous old coots who fancy themselves matchmakers. They made me grin a lot – and even get teary-eyed a couple of times too. Ilene, grandmother to the precocious Riley (who I adored), complements these two cowboys nicely and brings some feminine sensibilities to their shared common sense. Abby’s cousin Tess, local cattle rancher Evan (father of the aforementioned Riley), and the Sloan brothers add other delightful layers to the story – and I’m looking forward to reading their stories too. I wouldn’t even be surprised if Wes’s erstwhile brother shows up in his own story at some point – and I would welcome it.

Bottom Line: I’m a big fan of Webb’s books so I was super excited to read this first book in her new series! Layered and relatable characters – with just enough eccentricities to keep things interesting – not only set the stage for Wes and Abby’s happily ever after but also provide delightful possibilities for future books. I loved this introduction to Three Springs & look forward to more. A great start to a new series!

I love the cover! I grew up in a small town. Everyone pitched in when/where needed, so that’s what I would do. It has it’s faults but there truly is a sense of community there.

  2. Thanks Carrie for reviewing and featuring my new release on your blog. Glad you enjoyed the town and this new set of characters. I’ve been having fun writing more stories in Three Springs. Hope you have a fabulous weekend!
