The princess was the guardian of the light of the black wolf and the grey. White boar greatly desired her light, though the boars had possession of their own. When the princess refused to give up the light, both were given to the fire to do with them as it wished.

Memory loss prohibits Izzy from remembering her life before age seven when she suffered a terrible trauma that left her with physical scars. Crippling panic keeps Izzy from wandering beyond the stables but Tubs, the Gudwyne’s young stable boy, encourages Izzy to go beyond the property’s rock wall into a world that promises possible answers but also great danger.

Gifted with claws of copper and teeth of iron, the black wolf and the grey call him “White Wolf”; for he is the greatest of them with the power of flame and ash.

While running to escape his past, Jonathan Gudwyne rescued Izzy and took her in, but who did she belong to before he became her guardian?

With the touch of the wolf’s great paw, the girl rose out of the ashes a woman—a mighty warrior armed with a copper axe.

A mysterious cellar filled with secrets sets Izzy on a path to the New World where the Wendigo wanders and Water Panther swims. In the wilds of seventeenth-century America, Izzy and Jonathan discover the legends of the New World aren’t the fairytales of their library home in England.

It was somewhere near book one hundred when a thought sparked. It started as small as an ember’s glow. Singular and insignificant like the sound a letter makes alone. By book one hundred and twenty, those sounds piled upon one another and formed words until a nagging sentence was born. Nurtured in my mind, the three tiny words puffed and swelled together like the grains in a pot of boiling oatmeal.

“Who am I?”

It was a question that hung in awkward silence whenever I asked it as a little girl. Just an uncomfortable silence and the same rehearsed response from Jonathan each time.

“You are Isabelle Gudwyne. That is who you are.”

So as an obedient and dutiful member of the Gudwyne household, I tried to shelve those nagging three words. As days stretched into years and the book count of my dare became smaller, I began to take notice among all the different letter combinations, word pairings, sentences, and paragraphs that there was a common thread. As I replaced each volume in its place, their stories lingered in my mind hours after they were put away. They teased me with their knowledge. Their leather shells no longer held secrets. Something I fear I may never know for myself. I am only aware of my present, while they, however, are complete works with a beginning, a middle, and an end. With each cover that I close, I know someone or something better than myself. Even after reading Jonathan’s science books, I know more about the earth’s rock layers than who I am and where I come from.

The reason why I can’t dance isn’t solely from the lack of coordination. It’s mostly due to the absence of joy from an only moderately completed task. Somewhere along with the dare, I unshelved my three-worded question and the secret hope was fanned that somewhere in one of these books, I would find my answer. But I didn’t find it. Maybe it will be in book two hundred and fifty-one. I can’t help but sigh instead of celebrating. Dare or no dare, I’m not finished here.
