For some incomprehensible reason, God had seen fit to show him that forgiveness and mercy were his, that he had been saved, that the salvation he’d been given couldn’t be lost.

Thank You. I’m not worthy. No, he was as far from worthy as a man could get. Yet none were worthy.

“Alberto?”

He stepped back into the motorcar and faced her. “You all right?”

“I thought … you’d …”

That he’d deserted them. “I needed some air before I fell asleep.”

“We’ll be there … soon?” Too much weakness accompanied her words. He needed to get her to a hotel where she could rest.

“An hour or so.” He made the necessary adjustments and climbed from the motorcar. After cranking it, he slid back in, adjusted the controls, and maneuvered onto the main road.

“Try to go back to sleep. You need all the rest you can get.”

As did he, but that wasn’t happening anytime soon.

“Why did … they start looking for me now? I was safe … for months.”

Of course she wouldn’t rest. “Before I left the city, I closed the speakeasies, disbanded the rest of his men, and destroyed the liquor in storage. I think that slowed Stefano down.” He tightened his grip on the wheel. “He was too busy rebuilding to worry about you or me for a while.”
